    Hi,
    Could anybody list out which are the IT companies in India that  have applied six sigma methodology in software development.
    Few names like Wipro etc. are common and I guess that since they are doing projects with GE they can’t escape it. But what about  other IT firms ?
    Rgds.

    I think it is still early days for six sigma in software. Though companies like WIPRO, Infosys, HP etc., are implementing six sigma in bits and pieces, the applicability and impact is yet to be established unlike the hardware industries where the application and results are straightforward and effective respectively.

    Hi,
    Six Sigma has come a long way from the times when it was used in the manufacturing sector. Agreed, it is easier to get data on products you can physically inspect, but companies like TCS and Wipro have successfully adapted Six Sigma to Software Development. The major change comes in understanding how to gather data as applied to software.
    Impacts can be clearly seen when you analyze data from the whole organization and track trends over the years. If your productivity keeps increasing (even incrementally) with a corresponding decrease in Field Errors, you are seeing the effect of having a robust Six Sigma methodology in place.
    One can argue that this trend may be due to improved skills, training etc, but if this trend is seen over a period of 5 years across an organization having 15000+ people on board, it is something to think about.

    Satyam is implementing six sigma. Satyam has developed a proprietory iSTRIVE methodology for driving projects in IT / software. iSTRIVE stands for Identify, Set (Define), Track(Measure), Review(Analyze), Improve, Validate, Ensure(Control).

    You can search it at NASSCOM website. I’ve forgotten the exact link but there’s a consolidated list of companies with their Quality Certifications (iso, cmm, six sigma).

    Apart from this, a few companies I know, those  have implemented/undertaken six sigma initiatives are: R Systems International Ltd., Noida;  Patni Computers, Noida; Tata Honeywell, Gurgaon; Satyam Computer Services Ltd.;

    Unlike the manufacturing industry, software industry is definitely is yet to mature in terms of well defined measuring processes taking into consideration so many parameters including the skill levels (which requires complex measuring/calibrating/verifying), which makes six sigma for IT still in its infant stages.
