I am aware of three different types of champions, depending on the organization’s structure: a senior champion, a deployment champion, and a project champion. The most frequent interaction that a Black Belt has, though, is with a project champion.

A project champion: should help identify, select, and sanction a BB project, should provide direction to the BB’s project team, be communicated to from the BB as the project progresses, help the BB get through potential stumbling blocks, ensure that proper resources are identified for the BB’s project team, keep the BB mindful of the project’s goal in terms of business objectives, relay the progress and results to the next level of management, and follow up on the project when it is completed or certified.

In addition, in a larger sense, the project champion should be driven to help the Six Sigma implementation and deployment succeed.

    Hope this helps.

I am sure the other answers are well intentioned and follow the convoluted teaching of some consultants, but the term Champion was first used (to my knowledge) by Peters and Watermann in In Search of Excellence. They also used ther terms Sponsor and Implementer. Go there for a clear picture of roles.

    Hi
My two bit to understand the role of the Champion (a.k.a the sponsor)
The Champion Or Sponsor Is The Person(s) Who Is Accountable For And Sanctions A Six Sigma Project. The Champion Or Sponsor Is Involved In Project Team Chartering, Reviews Progress, Helps Remove Organizational Barriers To Project Success, And Is Often The Decision-Maker For Approval Of Final Recommendations

Regards and have a great day,

I do not think Champion equal to BU Head or Sponsor, I think Champion is only a honorary title for the BBs who have successfully completed serveal big six sigma projects. Champion may be a project leader , perhaps, he/she also may be a sponsor  in another project.

You are completely wrong as to the definition of Champion. See the dictionary for the correct definition and please don’t propogate the incorrect definition:

Champions are the facilitator’s of the Six sigma initiatives…
    1. From project perspective they are interested in the output of the six sigma project and help to GBs and BBs to overcome the difficulties in different stages. Champions are also the final approver of the project results and implementation of the solution suggested.
    2. Organizations perspectve…Champions reviews the progress of Six sigma initiative. Defines Vision, sets the goal and approves the strategy for improvement.

Most Important :To avoid playing politic, and being misguided following the direction of the sponser who may have a hidden agenda (specially in Strategic Merging Projects).

Well said Jason. You really put Patrick and the rest of these fools in their place. Maybe Patrick will respond to you in a similar lightening like 4.5 years. Your real Black Belts are quick.

Are there “official” or widely accepted designations for six sigma certifications?  For instance, the project management world uses PMP, a Project Management Institute designation for project management professional.
In Six Sigma,  I have seen some use SSBB, SSGB, SSMBB, but have never seen one for Six Sigma Champion…

Let me try this one…..SSC???  Be a trend setter and add it to your business card.  More and more folks are using the designation of LSS so it would be LSSBB, LSSGB, LSSMBB and now LSSC.

Champions are individuals that have the courage and leadership abilities to create an environment that will successfully develope/integrate the Six Sigma philosophy. The results will enable the organization to become more competitive and profitable through increasing customer satisfaction.

I am not sure if this will meet everyones definition, however in my opinion any BB worth their weight in salt would define a SS Champion as someone who understands the principals of lean and systems thinking (please read the Fifth Principle Field book). Someone who “Gets it” after you read the Fifth Principle field book if you do not understand what I mean by “Gets it” please give me a call and we can discuss in depth.703-862-1094
