Does anyone know of any well-known companies in China (Shanghai) that have implemented 6 Sigma?   Is it public information?

One of them is our client. Main problem in China is job hopping is a too common thing for BB. About 60-70% of BB trainees from our client left the company in within one year and looking for a greener pasture at somewhere else. This is a probable cause you cannot find any six sigma related public information from them. :-)
Good and bad news for us and other consultants as well ! Good one is BB candidates trained by us are recognized by Chinese market while bad one is this company is quite hesitate to train more BBs in the future.

My former empployers of Honeywell is one of the Six Sigma leader in China. I am not talking about the practice in Honeywell, but the best pracitce in MNCs. If we want to keep the key staffs including the BB & GB we needs to work out an retention program. And before we send BB candidates, in this case, we need to have a training agreement sign a training contract. In this way we can keep more talents we have.

MMI, Kaifa, Magnecomp, Lafe, etc. used to my ex-company suppliers. Hope they have upgraded their quality standard to six sigma. They have never heard about six sigma when I audited thier plants in mid 90s.

    Hi, Janna,
I contacted some Six Sigma consulting companies in China several months ago. The trainers are from GE and they formed their own companies offering GB or BB certificate training. They assured me that GBs certified by them can find jobs in Six Sigma companies (Motorola, GE) very easily. (They might recommend the new certificates)
I really doubt that, for people can get certified without working experience or project experience. What is the point of getting certified? I also talked about this with Dr. Popovich earlier when I was involved doing a GB courseware.
Please be careful when hiring those with GB or BB certificate. They may be qualified but may not be of great credibility.
    Good luck!

You have to know the background of a six sigma consultant. Read. I don’t try to belittle BBs or consultant from GE. National Semiconductor had to engage second consultant with silimar experience in the wafer fab after they found the first consultant from GE did not fit in and cannot understand NS requirements.Guarantee you to secure a job at Motorola or GE after attending their six sigma program is a plain bull from those Chinese consultants. I had to went through a 5-hour non-stop crazy interview process when I applied a middle manager post (as an outsider) at Motorola.

Thanks for your message. Please don’t blame those Chinese consultants. The same here in America. I met some consulting firms run by former GE BBs or MBBs. Six Sigma consulting market is not so regulated while more commercialized. It is hard to make a decision.
No doubt that China is the biggest potential market for quality management and process improvement. But I am afraid that some people are abusing the Six Sigma.
If you have a chance searching the Six Sigma consulting firms in China, most of them have sort of relationship with popular US headquarters. Chinese need to make wise decisions when they want to commit something. It is not a one-person deal.

Business people in Asia expecially in China make decision not solely based on the capability or payback unlike Americans. “Relationship” plays a major role in securing a business deal in Asia. My company lost out one bid for a major bank six sigma contract due to their decision maker picked his “own six sigma company” ran by his proxy.

Sorry to hear about that. Do you have some local people in your China office? I am just asking out of curiosity. Maybe you can have some Chinese partner to help out.
Relationship is very very important in China. Same as we say that we need to build up NETWORK, especially in the MBA classes. But it is upset that nobody is going to hire me even with my wide network in China. haha.

    Wayne,
You must not have clearly understood the poster’s request for assistance.    Janna was asking for Six Sigma assistance not for the Lean and business consolidation assistance touted on your web site.      In addition to violating forum rules by advertising your business, you are misrepresenting your abilities.     A retraction of your offer to assist with Six Sigma programming would seem to be in order.

Good to know people r talking abt Six Sigma companies in China. I  argued with dad the other day that a dissertation on this topic would be a great contribution to the field, although mine was on the Six Sigma supply chain.
I thought companies should send their own staff to the Six Sigma training rather than pick up from ourside.
Good, I’ve jotted down the company names you guys mentioned above. Anyone suggest a start point of this career path in China? Cheers.

Im working as Continuous Improvement Manager at Alcan Packaging Propack Jiangyin, we  have 5 facilities here in CHina ( Huizhou, Chengdu, Beijing, and Jiangyin).. Our mother company is Alcan Inc. (World’s 2nd largest producer of primary aluminum, Engineered products, Packaging, check out Alcan.com) We started with LSS three years ago and George Group is our consultant. I joined the company late last year when they pirated me from our Philippine Plant.
Our business group  (Propack China, Asia Packaging) is expecting to deliver 30% EVA savings from our 1.1Mio$ Eva Annual Target from the first half of the year projects. We have 2 Full Time BB ( I’m one of them), 8 Part Time BBs, and  50+ GBs and 11 YBs. This next half of the year we’re gonna launch our WhiteBelt Training..
I would say that our LSS programs here in China is stilll a farcry compared to our sister companies in US and Europe because of the Cultural Issues, the management is 95% involved but we cant get the buy-in from the Rank n Files yet since people doesn’t care and have no fear of losing their jobs..average tenure here is 1 year..Im getting a bit frustrated now and thinking of looking for mature and more susceptible environment.. But ill hang on  here and wait til the company you mentioned post some job openings soon..

We just get a LSS training contract from one of Alcan subsidiaries in Asia (outside China). They want us to re-train their GBs with our LSS approach.
Chinese people culture is different with Westerners. We know how to handle Chinese way. :-)

Six Sigma is a hot cake business in China. Unfortunately, many Chinese consultants without hands-on six sigma experiencne calling themselves lean six sigma consultants. Some bad apples spoilt the markert.

    lean ignacio,
I read your posting as it comes up when one types “alcan” into yahoo.
    think about that!
My suggestion would be that you talk to your CIC about your future career plans and that you do not distribute company information to the outside world

    Hi,

I hope you don’t mind me bumping this old discussion. I am an engineering student majoring in quality development. Next fall I will write my master thesis and I hope to find a suitable international company in Shanghai for this purpose. The thesis will be based on Six Sigma methodology and I am currently working on finding the right people to contact. Does anybody here have any suggestions on suitable companies to get in touch with? Dos and donts?
