    Hi Kevin,

I remember from about 2 months ago that Amazon was hiring regional Six Sigma Directors, so they must have a program in place or are developing one.

What others have you heard of?

    Sincerely,
    Kristy

Ted, thanks for the response. The only others I have heard of are Amazon and Motorola.

My thought’s are that if the ultimate goal is to make the company profitable using Six Sigma, why not invest in those companies. Why not have a mutual fund that invest solely in Six Sigma companies.

I need to do more research but I’ll keep you posted if you are interested.

Hi Kristy, thanks for the response. The only others I have heard of are GE, Citigroup, Sun Microsystems, Motorola, Jaguar and Allied Signal.

My thoughts are not so much in the search for employment (couldn’t we all use a better job) but that if the ultimate goal is to make the company profitable using Six Sigma, why not invest in those companies. Why not have a mutual fund that invest solely in Six Sigma companies.

I need to do more research but I’ll keep you posted if you are interested.

I have actually tried this pooling several 6 Sigma companies into a fictitious fund. The results were appalling. It performed worst than the S&P. I would be very weary about companies or people that tout Six Sigma as the driving force behind raisting a companies stock price. In every instance I have looked into it was a function of a rising tide, effect not Six Sigma. Six Sigma is not a silver bullet. You still have to make the right decisions about the business.

Fortune magazine had an article titled “Why You Can Safely Ignore Six Sigma” in their January 22, 2001 issue. It mentions among other things, that Motorola (a company famous for Six Sigma) released the Iridium. A satellite phone that no one bought. Six Sigma is not a guarantee for success, it is a tool to achieve success. But, it only works if you are selling something people want to buy.

If the purose of your question was to garner a group of 6S companies as part of your investment portfolio, I would urge caution. A better blanket investment strategy (if that is your aim) would be to view the Malcom Baldridge winners over the past 8 years…….ROI for those entities have steadily outperformed all major indexs – on avg. app. 3 to 1.

3M has been using six sigma for 1 +  years…all areas of the company, globally.  # of projects and $$ benefit is huge.  Support is from the top. 3M action with six sigma will be in the textbooks for speed/scope of deployment, benefit and sustainability.

Are you involved in 6-Sigma?  If you were, you would understand that the data you are using here in your test has many outside factors that are irrelavent to what you are trying to measure.  First of all, name one 6-Sigma company that in on the S&P, which, to my understanding is retail companies and not manufacturing.  Second, what have the stock prices and mutual funds been doing for the past year other than tanking in value?  And Last, Sony a Six Sigma company for the last 3 years made a profit this fiscal year inspite record losses by Panasonic and other competitors.  Note that Sony is now the #1 electronics company passing Panasonic for the first time.
Last, what is with the rag on Motorola for a satalite phone (from another respondant to your message)?  Motorola happens to make faster CPU’s in terms of calculations per second than Intel (Note all MacIntosh Computers use Motoroal CPU’s, not Intel).  Motorola makes my Sprint PCS (a company that could use 6-Sigma) flip-digital Cell phone, which is great.  All of the NFL communications gear is Motorola.  Most radios used in any warehouse environment are Motorola, and soon, you will see their great 68040 chips running most PDA’s.
6-Sigma implementation in the first 3 years of implementation is not going to be noticable to the average share holder.  However, any company focussed on meeting a customers needs and continued performance improvement and innovation will be a survivor in the long haul.

Sony has been a 6-Sigma Company for 3 years now.  I’m supprised that hardly anyone has mentioned or was aware of that.  Possibly because more people are suprised when an American company adopts something as the Japanese are known for their implementation of the teachings of Demming and Lean Thinking.  6 Sigma was our obvious next step.  As you can imagine, we have been very successful with our implementation, and now hold the possition of the largest designer/manufacturer of electronics, passing Panasonic who has held this position for years.

Why don’t you state what company you are from and who your competitors are? If your approach is honest why shouldn’t they talk to you.

Caterpillar fully implemented 6 Sigma globally in 2001 and was accreditive in its projects versus the roll-out costs.  We now have over 900 Blackbelts worldwide and are working toward 10-15% Greenbelts.  All CAT employees have received 6 Sigma introduction.  So far, implementing a 6 Sigma culture is going very well for us.

Hawk Corporation deploys six sigma corporate wide.  Delphi Automotive is using six sigma but only in a superficial way.  They prefer the red x stratigies as imposed by their number 1 customer, GM.  Sony has a full fledged program and so does ABB.  Guide corporation tried to deploy six sigma unsuccessfully because of the aforementioned GM.  They now are using the red x strategies per GM.  I know Ford has deplyd six sigma, but Chrystler is not going there.  They are using the red x as well.  Square D and Johnson Controls are using six sigma.  I interviewed at Bombardier for a MBB position, they have quietly been using it for years.

A few six sigma companies cannot save the economy, as there are a lot of special causes affecting it right now.  However, Six Sigma is very important for companies to survive in the present economy.  Without it, companies will go out of business completely like CF Motorfreight, Lady Baltimore, Vanguard Airlines.  Others will go into bankruptcy like World Com, US Air, Kmart, etc.  The remaining companies are competing for a smaller supply of customers today, and the ones that are succeeding are the ones that have a strong 6-Sigma culture.

HON IS DOWN BECAUSE THERE NEW CEO “COTE” CAN’T MANAGE MUCH, PROVEN AT TRW AND GE DURING HIS TENURES THERE.
GE IS STILL STILL SUFFERING IDENTIY CRISIS POST JACK WELCH, IT WILL TAKE 2 YEARS TO LICK ITS WOUNDS AND BEGIN COMING TOGETHER AGAIN.
SUNW IS …. WELL SUNW, DON’T COUNT ON 6 SIGMA TO MAKE A FLOWER OUT OF A PIG!!
AND AS FOR C, WELL CITIGROUP SHOULD BE DOING BETTER. THE FINACIAL INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE SHOULD BE DOING BETTER. Bof A IS AND THEY USE 6 SIGMA.
IT DOES PROVE THAT 6 SIGMA ALONE IS NO SILVER BULLET, BAD MANAGEMENT STILL SINKS A COMPANY REGARDSLESS OF GOOD INTENTIONS.

I think your right.  The S&P has hand selected companies in it to represent the overall market.  Dell is a company that shows how well computer sales are doing, Wal-Mart may be in their to show how well Retail is Doing, General Motors for the Auto Industry, etc.

Yes, DuPont, aside from its wacko owner, does implement 6-Sigma effectively.  That is the beauty of 6-Sigma—it spans ALL businesses, be they automotive, aerospace, general industry or retail.  It is deifinitely not a quick fix however, as with all Lean Processes.  Shainin, or Red X are methodologies within DOE that are ‘process non-specific’.  All Lean culture experiments take time, the culture inculcation being the most important.  This is not rocket science.

    Anyone,
Please provide an operational definition of a ‘Six Sigma Company’. I expect the definitions will be as diverse as the definitions of a ‘Certified Six Sigma Black Belt’. Would love to here your opinions.

What designates a company as SIX SIGMA? Most if not all of the companies listed still have much higher defect rates that 3.4 per million—is it that their processes are under constant review and their goals are to become SS? —Thanks

    Y = x1 + x2 + x3 + x3…
Profitable Company = Market Factors + Earnings + Growth + “Six Sigma” Savings + …
Just because a company has a Six Sigma initiative does not mean that it is profitable or defect-free.  The Six Sigma Savings variable and its effect on profitability will differ dramatically from one company to the next.  How serious is the company about Six Sigma (a marketing ploy, reaction to a competitor launch, desperate act to curtail a downward spiral or a true cultural change)?  How effective have the Belts been in their projects?  How much time/money has been spent in training the Belts?  How much influence, support and pressure has come from Senior Management?  I am no longer impressed when a company simply claims that they have launched a Six Sigma initative.  There are many companies that are very profitable with strong quality managemnent systems that are not “Six Sigma” practitioners.  From an investment strategy perspective, SHOW ME THE MONEY!

In my view, in the present Global environment and market perspective, all the Global manufacturers/financial/consulting companies are using Six Sigma as one of the important tool for their marketing purposes, as how people put ISO Certified logo to their companies…..Tell me the companies which go practicing MSA or DOE when coming to implementation…i dont think so they go for defective calculations….except Manufacturing. Coming to the service Industries, its zero. I guess there are vital few companies which take Six Sigma seriously and it has/would give them drastic changes in their systematic approach in reaching their customers. TOYOTA would be the best example for Six Sigma/Lean Manf.

“to know the companies which practice six sigma in us I would go in search engine and will type Six sigma + Us companies + Name.”
That will work too. I also found this more effective: that is to use Google and type:
[inurl:http://www.companyname.com six sigma(or any other keyword that you want to serch within the URL)]
    2 cents.

Yep, that’s right. Remember that SS concentrates on defects while Baldrige award scores companies on seven categories:
    -leadership
    -strategic planning
    -Customer and Market Focus
    -Information and Analysis
    -Human resource focus
    -Process management
    -Business Results
    and other 11 core values.
According to a ASQ’s Quality Course, it mentioned:
    Baldridge Index: 685.26% change
    SP 500: 163.11% Change
    2 cents!

Bethlehem Steel Corporation had gone by the way side a couple years ago.  I wouldn’t suggest investing in “Ma Beth”.  But, from what I understand, the employee stock options have been excellent for the b/o company – ISG.  Not sure if they adopted SS or not.  Anyone know?

I have reviewed most of the posts attached to this thread. I find it amazing that people on this forum want to attribute a companies success or demise simply to 6sigma, and not the other (million) things that could have effect.
Go to the Motorola web site, they have a history overview of the companies major acheivements since the 1920s. In 1980 era there is a very brief mention of initiating 6sigma. After that, it is never mentioned again. I guess that they do not attribute there incredible growth simply to 6sigma. There are many large and small companies that have rocketed to great success. With out calling it 6sigma, they have probably used many common sence “soft tools” that are supposedly now 6sigma tools.
Unless you are a consultant for 6sigma, or you have absolutely 0 problem solving skills or common sence, there is not so much to 6sigma. Get over it, and get back to work!!

Please give me more information on the common seance “soft tools”.
I only know how to use seance soft tools to talk to Elvis or Jimi Hendrix (depends on whether I’m in a prescription or black market state of mind).
Looking forward to expanding my soft tools.

The poster said “sence” not “seance”.  He can’t spell and you can’t read.  If you are still having problems with your soft tools, let me know and I will contact Dr. Barry of the Bench in Sausalito.

Am I the first to make a typo in this forum ? I think not!
I am refering to charts, graphs, plotting data, ect. as “soft tools”
It is typical for the over educated acedemic, to take common terms and practices understood by most, and try to make more out of them than there realy is.

Hey, I knew it was misspelled but I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. If I concluded he meant sense as it common sense, I would have had to tell him he is full of pxxp.
Since I have already picked on my new friend, miker, too much today; I was trying to be kinder and gentler.

It is also typical for the uneducated and/or lazy person to quickly attack rather than take the time to try and spell correctly.  It should be a matter of professionalism.  Granted this is not a dissertation forum but in many cases, a typo will confuse the reader as to the intent of the author.
