The comparision is interesting from perspective of implementation challanges each of them offer.Depending upon the organizational environment involving its culture and top-management view on quality, differences in approach of Six-Sigma and ISO-9000 can be drawn. For example,
    1. if quality is viewed by management as a cost center which can be beneficial (may be), Six-Sigma is the way to go.
    2. if quality is viewed by managment as a needed cost center to have utmost clarity of business processes at a short span of time and in the process earn and internation recognition, ISO 9000 is the way to go.
    3. if in a B2B business and management views Quality as an investment, ISO is the way to go.
    4. if management views its business to be a benchmark in its market in some sence and has challange to ensure to stay at the top, Six-Sigma is the way to go.
    5. if management presumes its business to be at the top among competition purely based on bottomline results, ISO and its underlying Cost is a strict no-no and Six-Sigma is like keep doing something on the name of quality.Quality is all about organizing the way people work. When people come to work, each individual comes with various personal skills, priorities, attitude and approach for one common goal. Quality is to neutralize the differences thereby creating a synergy by structuring/standardizing the way different people work (make decision/ draw action-plan/ execute plans).

Actually we cant compare these two in quality aspect. Because ISO 9001 stand to systemize the operations and it drives organization to simplify and specify the each process through system approach. But in Six Sigma it would not talk about systemizing of the processes. It more conserning about systematic approach to reduce the variation of the process output.

    Some coments about the ISO9000
The standards are improved as the new requirements of market, customer etc.. are necessary. The 3 baselines of the 2000 version are:
    – process management
    – continous improvement
    – customer satisfaction
The new one is coming soon (2008 version) . Six sigma is a tool to reach improvement at QMS. There are other tools for that too. I think six sigma can help ISO 9000 with improve projects.

I am practising Quality Manager. In 2006 and 2007, my MD who has met customers regularly often get feedback on a few weld studs were breaking causing field installation problem.
I have used six sigma method to solve this problem. Haven’t heard any complaint since then.
Six sigma and ISO is complimentary. In my view, both are required.
If you are facing a particular process problem, try six sigma.
If you are facing a organization interaction process problem, you may have more luck in ISO.
I often get reply from process owners in corrective action reply (CAR) that is not going to solve the root cause of problem. The reply is only meant to satisfy the requirement to reply. If the process owners are well equipped with knowledge of six sigma and the resources, I bet the reply will be different.
If you read on Dr.Deming work in Japan, it is more towards “statistical method of problem solving”. This is the same as six sigma (a term coined by Motorola). The coined term is also better for marketing. I believe Dr.Deming has gone far beyond the statistics. The second part of his work was I believe is to “educate and influence” the top Japanese bosses on his own version of “management philosophy- see Deming’s 14”, without which, things would not have happened so well for Japan.
The second part of the work is the more difficult part. The top bosses understang in the concept of Six-Sigma is important! Your need a very senior expert to educate and influence the bosses!

In general cases the buyer will determine which sampling plan and what AQL to adopt. The AQL 1.5 is applied when severe inspection conditions are required on high-class expensive items. The AQL 2.5 is applied when textiles of normal/good quality are involved. There are three types of sampling plans: i.e. single, double and multiple sampling plans. Each sampling plan can be performed at three levels, i.e. normal, tightened and reduced, depending on inspection requirements and quality of the products. In the garments industry generally single and double normal sampling plans are applied. Therefore only examples of these two will be provided. The sample size code letter table shows various lot sizes corresponding to a serious of code letters. There are seven inspection levels, four for general inspection (Already mentioned) and three for special inspection. For garment inspection, general inspection level II (normal II) is normally applied.

Single sampling plan – Normal inspection:

Assurance an AQL of 2.5 % and a lot size of 1200 garments and the sample size is 80 garments. If the number of defective garments found is 5 the total lot is “Acceptable” suppose if the defective garments found is 6, the total lot is “Reject/ Re-Check”.

Double sampling plan – Normal Inspection:

Assurance an AQL 4.0% and a lot size is 1200 garments and the sample size is 80 garments. If the Number of defective garments found is 7, the total lot is “Acceptable” suppose if the defective garments found is 8 the total lot is “Reject/ Re-Check”.

    For Example:

Total garments (lot Size) 1200 garments
Sample size (selected for inspection) 80 garments
    AQL 2.5 / 4.0

If the major defective found is 5 and minor defective found is 7 the total garments is “Acceptable”. If the defective exceed (Above 5 major and 7 Minor), the total garments is Reject / Re-check.

AQL max = Acceptable Quality level.
i.e.: maximum number of defective sample.
    * = Sample Size, + = AQL number
