Hello,I have been invited to give a six sigma conference to a group of college kids from several majors. How can I structure it to keep their attention? It would be easier for me if it was for engineers only…
I thought including a study case or something… but I need to fill up 2.5 hours!!!!Regards,

How about making a section of the discussion interactive. Conduct a Catapult experiment across the stage to show how adjusting your design can optimise the performance of reaching your target and reducing your level of variation. eg. People randomly operate a Toy Catapult and result with balls going everywhere (high variation) across the stage. Then you discuss the factors that lead to variation (release angle, operator influence, ball type, wind, etc), Tighten up the factors that lead to variation and repeat the release of balls across the stage. In both situations – plot a control chart on the wall or overhead screen to show how your performance has changed from the initial random operation of the equipment to the improved state. 30 minutes of time may be taken up with such an experiment – everyone learns about variation due to either the operator or equipment, can apply control charting techniques, calculate (six level, mean, st dev, variance, etc), DOE, Gauge R&R, brainstorming (ideas from the audience on how to fix the problem), etc…..can be a very practical exercise with everyone getting something out of it. Main point is that your audience starts to appreciate the concept of variation!!!!!!!

Why not use the opportunity to illustrate the value of Lean?  There are numerous hands-on exercises that are readily available and can engage even large groups of people.  I find that Lean is easily understood by just about everyone and you can demonstrate the power of a lean transformation easily in 2.5  hrs.

What size group?  Depending upon audience size you could use one of several different types of audience participation exercises that demonstrate some of the fundamental principles of lean/six sigma.  There are several exercises we use for various audiences depending up on specific topic/audience.  for example:
