I have many dealings in the Engineering and Construction industry, and honestly do not see Six Sigma being used by the E&C firms there like we see in large manufacturing or regimented service environments. In E&C I see a lot of focus on project mgt and critical path stuff; some notable attention to systematic IT, financial, and procurement services(in support of projects); much vendor auditing and surveillance, but little ISO and even less Six Sigma. In E&C the projects are king. The only places I have seen Six Sigma being used here is when a large construction company owns a production facility, generally by an acquisition, then it might be used there, along with SPC and other higher end quality engineering tools. Even then, these tools rarely seem to migrate from the production facility back into the E&C firm. I do see Six Sigma being used by the suppliers to the E&C firms, which seem to be more manufacturing oriented. Just my observation.0July 29, 2004 at 12:25 pm #104602

I work for a development company which also oversees construction of our properties. We have successfully implemented Six Sigma into the way we attack design and everything else. Each business area contributes to get to the bottom line, completion, faster and more efficiently. Just my opinion, but I highly suggest Six Sigma for engineering as there are snags in the process that could be avoided if the correct information is known at the right time. Please feel free to email me anytime with questions. All the best in your quest.0July 29, 2004 at 1:37 pm #104613Not every six sigma tool may be of high value in construction. (I can’t see a DOE, for example.) But the philosophy and some of the tools can be brought into play.
A couple years ago, I interviewed for a six sigma position with Neumann Home Builders in Illinois. They wanted somebody to plan their processes for getting people into their new homes, etc. I don’t know if anything ever came out of it, but here’s a lead for you.0July 29, 2004 at 2:50 pm #104627My company — a large E&C firm — has worked dozens of six sigma projects on pure construction processes in our aviation, rail and transportation infrastructure sectors. We’ve found construction processes, which generally are very repetitive, conducive to six sigma — for example, concrete pours, installation of formworks and rebar, steel installation, welding, installation of piping, etc. There also are the supporting processes: material procurement and delivery, maximizing usage of heavy equipment, installating and testing of interlockings for rail, etc. We

The tools of Lean also have some application in construction. I have a colleague whose firm had major contract on an Intel facility. Their version of Lean resulted in a project being completed ahead of schedule and under budget for the first time in their history.

I hope you’re still monitoring this site. I would be interested in the case study you spoke of. I work for the construction division of a large retailer who would like to expand the use of 6 Sigma.
Thanks,
Doug0November 18, 2004 at 1:42 pm #110921I would be interested in hearing more about how you have successfully applied 6 Sigma. Please drop me an email note letting me know how I can reach you.
Thanks,
Doug0November 18, 2004 at 3:11 pm #110923Hi Doug,
I can be reached at 407-465-3441, or [email protected].

The high speed rail connecting between London and Paris. Please open website : http://www.bechtel.com
other companies in the industry that apply six sigma includes ; Jacobs engineering Group, Homebuilder, Armstrong Holdings, Vulcan Materials and Martin Marietta Materials.
I do reserach from their website and contact them through email but still cannot get the futher info on six sigma implementation in their company…
I highly interested to share experienced with u all guys outhere about six sigma implementation in E&C industry to ensure Six Sigma implementation is successfull in Ranhill Group in the future.
