I recently obtained my Black Belt Certification and have been asked by my employer if there exists a Six Sigma Black Belt Designation.  For instance, a Bachelor’s of Engineering is “B. Eng”.  I have seen “SSBB”, for Six Sigma Black Belt but is this an industry standard?

    Thanks,
    Mark

Unlike PMI which owns the PMP trademark there is no international certifying agency that owns the Six Sigma Black Belt name.  People learn a particular Body of Knowledge in Six Sigma and then  take a certification test through various entities.  certified practitioners most often use CSSBB on their business cards.  The closest we have to a national standard in the US is the ASQ certification.  But is you get one from BMG, Motorola ect… you are still a CSSBB.

bmcpherson is correct, there is no single certification standard for Six Sigma. Most people in the industry know which companies have the most stringent requirements for certification and the most comprehensive training programs. You can probably write down your own list of well-known companies with top to bottom six sigma programs and you’d be pretty much on target.
My certification is from ISSISSIPPI. (Search the discussion forum for that thread to get your own belt) They awarded me a Dark Salmon Belt simply by reading my mind through the screen of my computer. After much thought and careful deliberation and a background check of my own credentials, (I was very thorough) I awarded myself the title of Master Dark Salmon Belt.
I say all of that in jest of course, but sadly there are some six sigma certification mills that crank out Green Belts and Black Belts to anyone who can afford the price of admission without requiring any practical work with the tools. To me their certification carries as much wait as my Dark Salmon Belt.
    Just my opinion.

If you are looking for a title you’re probably looking for the wrong thing from Six Sigma.
