Project selection is an enormous beast. There are so many methods/tools to use to select projects.
First, I agree that I would have to know a little more about your organization.
Here are a few simple methods: top-down (based on management goals), bottom-up (based on customer requirements/complaints), and sideways (based on leveraging off past projects). You could get real complicated and technical, but this is a great start for a new Green Belt.
Also, talk to your manager about the organization’s goals (reduce inventory levels, improve cash flow, increase capacity on X system/machine, etc.). Find out what the top 5 customer (internal and external) complaints are. Talk to other Green Belts or Black Belts about thier completed projects (or projects near completion) that could be leveraged on another process/ system/ location/ etc. You can begin to create CT Trees(logical breakdown based on what is critical to quality) based on the high-level information you recieve.
Once you have an area to investigate and break-down the CTQ’s, make sure the scope of the project will increase the probability for success. In my experience, scope is a primary point of failure point for most projects that do not complete on time and/or within budget (or don’t complete at all).
Please email me for additional information. I have developed a trainng program on project selection and scoping, and can help you more if you wish.
Good luck.0July 25, 2001 at 4:00 am #65327

I’m surprised that your management staff have not identified the next projects for your BB wave. Usually, the Champion of your business unit will have done all of the up front work to develop the project listing tied both to the customer and the strategic plan of the business unit. Perhaps you should look into your business unit to ask these questions. I’m not sure any one of us can effectively identify the value added projects for your company.

Vineet SharmaMember@Vineet-SharmaInclude @Vineet-Sharma in your post and this person will
be notified via email. This is a very common concern among GBs. One of the best ways to identify GB project is to analyse the work that the GB does on a routine working day and how that ‘work’ is having a direct or indirect impact on a customer CTQ measure or an internal CTP (Critical-to-Process) measure. Subsequently baseline measurement can be quickly carried out on that particular CTQ or CTP to have a quick check on its current performance and that will give you a possible lead for a worthwhile GB project. For Example a process associate or an executive working in loan application processing area may consider TAT reduction or Defect Reduction in the application as a possible project through DMAIC methodology.

0March 4, 2004 at 4:03 pm #65319I am a Director in Corp IT, green belt trained. We are tasked with identifying projects with direct cost savings (cost avoidance not accepted). We are a small group and develop many new processes for the organization. We have a challenge when it comes to historical data. Much of it is not collected.
I’m interested in your trainng program on project selection and scoping. What are the options?

BrandonParticipant@BrandonInclude @Brandon in your post and this person will

Ask – What keeps you up at night? Which of your performance metrics are not meeting expectations? Where do you have customer issues? Follow this line of discussion. You should be able to identify where defects or variations exist in this person’s managed processes.
Once identified, prioritize them and decide which ONE to pursue….come back to the others later. Pick one, apply DMAIC and show improvement.0April 14, 2008 at 6:39 am #65323

I’m working for a leading mobile telecommunication industry which is the TOP 1 company in our country and we service more than 3.5 million customer base & I would like to look at the customer dissatisfaction records on our products and services mostly on available Value added service launch. but when you look at our customer base and compare the dissatisfy customer records channeled to us in less than 10% which is the case in most organization as most customers doesn’t take the time of complaining.
Our customer dissatisfaction records are channeled via Call centre. We have dedicated Complaint management users allocated for each division who handles these complaints.
I would like to look at the options that we could provide our contact centre officers to provide/empower to give customers solution at the time of channeling it self which will reduce the resolution time & prompt action.
appreciate if you give me your view.

0July 1, 2008 at 2:09 pm #65325In my experience as a Black Belt, I have seen yellow belts, green belts working on six sigma projects under the guidance of a black belt. These different belts are people with different skill level in the Six Sigma methodology working together on projects. They are all part of the Six Sigma organization.Hope this helps…

0September 14, 2009 at 4:43 am #65315Hi,
I am working for UBS. I work in the IT departement and my team deals with Avistar, PBX, Video Conferencing, Voice mail. I have recently undergone Six Sigma training which spanned for 7 hours, and I learnt various methodologies in it. But I don’t really know how to kick off my project, and on what topic should I go on. Can some one please advice me? I would be really glad to know it.
Best Regards,
Suresh0September 14, 2009 at 11:48 am #65316Then it is obvious that you wasted your 7 hours and the company’s money. Any training that does not show how to select and start a project is a waste of time. It is up to your management to identify potential areas of importance in the organization. You should have learned enough to ask the right questions. If all you learned was a bunch of tools at a very surface level, then you received a presentation, not training.
