I am training on Six Sigma and must do my first project concerning clinical labs.
Can anyone share some project about Six Sigma in Clinical Labs in order to get an idea of real cases?
My e-mail is: [email protected]
Thank you in advance.
Daniel0January 18, 2006 at 5:22 pm #60762The Transfusion Services at my workplace is currently undertaking a LEAN project, not Six Sigma to address increased growth within the hospital which equates to increased service needs. The Transfusion Service is constrained by space and personnel. The LEAN project is helping us to reduce waste, standardize work and workflow and assure supplies are readily available. We are still in the middle of this project but have already seen measures of success. Our next phase will include some redesign of the existing facility.

be notified via email.I have experience as a Medical Technologist and now I am at the black belt level working on implementing Lean Six Sigma throughout our laboratories within our healthcare system. Currently, we have one complete project with our second completion nearing. We began our projects in the laboratory and now are seriously lending some thought to moving outside of the laboratory setting and implementing in other areas within the hospitals (i.e. Emergency Departments, Surgical Units, etc.).
Be very careful to keep the staff constantly updated and communicate frequently in order to maintain buy-in. Laboratory people are, by nature, very detailed oriented, and they don’t like being surprised.
Our first project was wildly successful, and it has helped us to establish some “best practices” for future projects.
Feel free to email me with specific questions.0January 24, 2006 at 3:30 am #60767

be notified via email. We began our first project in September of 2004. Due to some snags with construction, we did not complete the project until the following summer. We are currently working on our 2nd and 3rd projects…both nearing completion.

be notified via email.I am a student in the final year of a CLS program and for my special topic i wanted to go and look at how six sigma can help improve labratory work flow, supplies, and overal moral of employee’s. Do you recommend any sources for information where i could find exactly how six sigma can help improve labratory quality. It could be websites or books, or anything in general. Thank you for your help.

In addition to that, I would check out the American Society for Quality’s website as well as the American College of Healthcare Executives website for case studies and suggested reading. Further, I would expand my focus to include Lean as well as Six Sigma. Most laboratories are implementing more of Lean at this point than Six Sigma.
Basically, if you were to google Lean Six Sigma, you’d find a great deal of information. Finally, I write a blog for this website that you should check out, and I have also written and presented quite a bit about Lean Six Sigma in the laboratory. Feel free to contact me off-line.0June 7, 2006 at 3:42 am #60935hi
iam a student iam thinking of doing a sixsigma project at a clinical albfor my green belt certification can anyone suggest anythin0June 8, 2006 at 6:07 pm #60944Hey Matthew:
As Andrew stated, check out this website – there are many articles available on how Lean Six Sigma has been used in this particular setting. I would offer only one word of caution when reviewing/reporting out on your findings…one thing that often gets overlooked when optimizing a step in the process is that the belts/process owners involved need to make sure that they do not optimize one step (i.e. the lab) only to make other steps inefficient.

be notified via email.Hello again, i have found some information reguarding Lean Six Sigma in the clinical laboratory, however, case studies are harder to come across. Is this because it is a new idea to use it in clinical labs or am i just not looking in the right areas. I would really like to find a case study where a specific test time has been reduced, or maybe inventory cut backs. Thank you again for your help. ~Matthew Herasuta
