If near perfect, is it possible to apply Six Sigma to the practice of mental health care?  Where the individual with concerns over mental health, would not be viewed as a defect but rather insightful to the role of variance in how quality is perceived and managed.

I would hesitate to use Six Sigma to replace a physician’s or another care giver’s contribution. However, a mental health institution, or the mental health department of a hospital, has processes with which its work gets done. Those processes certainly deserve some investigation.
The fields of psychology and psychiatry have many practitioners who are highly proficient at analyzing data. However, some six sigma methods may help make sure we take the right data, and maybe improve the caliber of the data obtained.
Other than that, I need to learn more before I make further recommendations.

If I read your post correctly, it appears the defect is described as the condition of the patient (the mental “defects”).  The condition of the patient may have nothing to do with the quality of service or treatment rendered to the patient; thus, the focus should be on the treatment and the quality of care given.

What happens if the patient at some level is aware of the strangeness of the mental processing, but sees self as defective, including perhaps the body.  The medications prescribed may add to the misery and experience of reality, since the brain attemtps to seek its own equilibrium.  Dr.. Deming once advised just mark them up or down once a day.  But if the medications cause problems without affording one to comprehend and understand the behavior that is being acted out, then what good is data that may be empiricle in nature to the exclusion of that which recognizes the structure of qualities of the moment being experienced.

I didn’t follow everything you said. However, it doesn’t sound like you are describing a true Six Sigma issue, but rather a medical practice issue. Six sigma really is about processes. If you are suggesting that the process of administering medication, or the process of monitoring the patient through data, might warrant some Six Sigma tools, that might be appropriate. However, Six Sigma is not a replacement for other professional dsiciplines. Now the question is: am I responding to the same points you were trying to make?
