I know you specified Six Sigma, but I thought I would share that Henry Ford Hospital’s pathology lab has done a lot with Lean. There is some detail, including publications, in the menu on the right.

    Dash,
Sorry, but it seems to me that this is the wrong question. A better question may be this: “What are the opportunities to improve quality and/or reduce costs within Pathology Services’ operations?”
If you can identify those opportunities, it will then be possible to determine the best tools/approach to employ – which may or not be six sigma.

    Dash,
Here are some guidelines on an approach that you could employ:

Conduct a workshop and/or interview the process owners, suppliers and customers to get input on pathology’s performance and the areas that need improvement.
Once you have input, you can direct your attention to the associated processes, including identifying performance measures and available benchmarks (generally widely available for healthcare processes). At this point you have the means to identify which outcome(s) to improve, associated measurements, and the means to establish improvement targets.
Next, the best means/tools for achieving the targets you identified in #2 may be considered, including 6sigma, lean, etc.
This may be oversimplified, however it’s a general approach that gets you to the point of being able to ask ‘What is the best tool or methodology available to fix this problem?” instead of “How can I use this methodology?”. Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    John

    Dash,
I am fully aware of the economical and human resource related constraints confronting pathology labs. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement methodologies have also played a critical factor in this scenario. However, a descent baseline for your concept is the American College of Pathologists. In addition, there are Six Sigma articles that relate to quality indicators in lab environments on High Beam.
    Regards,
    Eugene
