    Greetings all,
I am just learning the six sigma methodogy and would like to do a project on safety, particulary an event that occurs only during a few months of the year.Β  I would like to get anyone’s output on an approach for this. I welcome all your feedback.Β
    Thank you

I’ve done safety projects in the past. For instance, a upgrade at a customer site that only takes place twice per year was consistently producing injuries to our employees. I formed a six sigma project, defined the defect, looked at the procedures and other possible root causes of the defects, pareto’d the issues, and went on to solve the problem.
We’ve now done three upgrades without an OSHA issue. It can apply and it’s not rocket science, you just need to dig in and with your sleeves rolled up. Six sigma gives you all the tools you may need to solve the problem, even though you may not use them all. Don’t be overwhelmed, just find a MBB coach in your business to help.

would agree with Trev’s comments, it is about applying the right Lean and 6simga tools to whatever the problem, even if it is safety focussed. I can say this as I am an Env Health Safety manager for a blue chip company, and also a MBB.
So for as an example – the time it takes for Accident and Incident forms to be completed and the resultant corrective actions can all be monitored using the tools to ensure we get effective and timely resolution.
One of the best ones to make full use of is 5S as if properly taken up, you get a free 6th S ie improved Safety.
Anyway if you find something appropriate to do and would like someone to talk over with you have my email address, feel free to drop me a line. We can chew the fat over the topic.
    good luck with the work.

I have much experience with Six Sigma and safety projects in both the public and private sectors.Β  I agree with all other comments, and would be glad to help in anyway.Β  One preprojectΒ recommendation is to plan your metrics well, and you might be surprised howΒ well these metrics will fitΒ into other safety projects.Β  I can help you. I am a BB and have twelve years experience as a Safety Director and Safety Consultant.Β  Good Luck and be patient!Β Β  Please email me if I can help in any way.

I was searching the iSixSigma forum to look for benchmarking data on Health, Safety, and Environmental labor spending by medium sized Chemical companies — Don’t know if you are still in the Safety area, or if you may be able to help me find out what other companies spend on HSE services.

My favorite topic with lots of posts if you do search on this blog for the topic. A couple of questions first:1. Why safety and industrial accidents? Is there a high incident rate here or are you being proactive?2. Have you completed your training or just starting?3. What is the commitment from senior leadership and do you understand the tie to direct costs and production?4. If you don’t understand why I am asking these questions or have these answers, then you may not be ready to push this type of project. Search the site for lengthy discussions with many other competent posters to see what you may not understand.HF Chris Vallee

I know the feeling. Some of this stuff is like Discussion Forum Tourette’s Syndrome.
South Africa. Just got back from China. Pretty amazing the change over the last 6 years.
