    Hi
Just a food for thought, I feel DFSS (design for six-sigma) is more helpful than DMAIC cycle for software development and engineering. DMAIC is more an improvement cycle but since most of the software companies are involved in development and design kind of job DFSS is more helpful.

    Praveen,
iSixSigma will be publishing a few articles on Six Sigma application to the software development life cycle in the upcoming weeks. We realize that it’s an important area that hasn’t been discussed much and we hope to share thoughts and create discussions around this topic. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter to be notified of the latest article publications.
    Cheers,

I have to disagree.  DFSS is only helpful if you already have process in place and are already running Six Sigma.  I’ve been doing Six Sigma for years in the software industry very successfully.  Most Blackbelts, in my opinion, can’t get it to work because they don’t believe that there is a process in software development.  Wrong, there’s always a process; you just need to identify it, measure it, analyze your process measurements, and make improvements to the process.  To many people confuse measuring the process with measuring the results (e.g., bug counts, lines of code, etc.).  Instead, they should be measuring (time, rework, effectiveness) of each step in the process; just as if it were an assembly line.  Once you’ve established Six Sigma in your organization and are focusing on the process; not the results, then DFSS is wonderful when you start a new project (but not a new version of a project unless you are redesigning it from scratch).
I tried to start a thread several months ago on Six Sigma in the Software industry without much luck; I’m glad to see this one going.

Well, frankly I am not from a software background and look at software as more of development work. I would like to understand how you carry out DMAIC cycle in a software environment.

I agree with SixSigmaGuy. Software development is a transactional (Delivery, understanding the customer, etc) business thus making it harder to see the metrics. But they are still there.
I do not agree with Hemanth If the developer has been around for a while then they will be familiar the majority of the tools, methodologies and applications needed so DMAIC is more useful the DMADV. If the developer starts to develop a completely new product with new development tools/hardware/OS/application field then DMADV and DFSS may be more useful.
We use VOC, FMEA, KT Tools, Identifying the Root Causes, Cause and Effect (Ishikawa) Diagram, Pareto Charting and so on. These tools are essential to understanding very complex customer requirements and our processes.

    Hi Hemanth
If you post your email I will send you 1 page overview word 2000 diagram, which includes our DMAIC process. The process of designing the diagram helped me come to grips with the hole process.

Dear Freinds , great to see this enthu , but has anyone actually applied six sigma on the software development – DMAIC or DFSS , any case studies available , please do share .

We have had some very successful projects in the area of network security, network speed, and email speed. We are still working on deploying SS on actual development.
I also know GE have a very extensive SS deployment in their IT divisions.

sincere apologies for crashing your thread but this looks really interesting – I’m trying to find some core structures for setting up a QA dept in a software consultancy and would be extremely grateful for a copy of your diagram
I’ve been in s/w QA for a long time and have always maintained that supply chain concepts apply directly

    Carie, Mark k
I do not know how to post a word 2000 document containing draw elements to this forum, please excuse my ignorance. If you guys post temporary email addresses I will gladly forward the document or you could enlighten me on posting such documents. But I must point out that the diagram is only my interpretation of how to apply DMAIC, FMEA, PDAC and VOC. It took me some time to figure it out. But now after some practical applications it seems to be a very logical approach.
When a customer has very complex demands which on the service side have many CTQs and CPs using VOC to understand the most important CPs is extremely useful and in my opinion one should not even attempt to supply such services without using aforementioned tools.
    Kind Regards
    JP Rothery

Try Bruce Hayes at Six Sigma Advantage he can steer you in the right direction. SSA is the only Six Sigma provider to my knowledge that specializes in Six Sigma for Software.

He has got a group of some of the orginal guys from the Six Sigma Research Institute out of Motorola working for him.
