I am a college student entering my senior year looking at the world of Corporate Governance. When asked by my supervisor at work to look into the different sorts of compliance he asked me to look into Six Sigma. I found this site trying to dig through the pages upon pages google gave me and was wondering if anyone knew a good place to find, or had, a good overview of Six Sigma that could give me a feel of how it works and is run.

    Thanks,
    Russ

Blue info bar to the left of the screen- click new to six sigma.
Although – SS is not a compliance process, but an improvmeent methodology.

Thank you I am going through it now. Though I dont see anything that explains it I find its history and effects when companies have implemented it. But I am failing to see anything on the process. I may be naive to think that I can get this information without purchasing a book but I am a college student and would like to try to gather information on my own.

It’s all there – promise. No need to buy a book – yet.  Try clicking on New to Six Sigma, then find Successful Deployments (bottom right). It might give youan idea of how it can be implemented. Then go to more definitions (six sigma defined, dmaic, dfss, etc.)

    Russ,
When you get through the stuff Brit steered you to, ask a good question that shows you took the time and I’ll send you a couple of good books.

    Russ,
You are wasting your time. If you want some kind of triangle between Corporate Governance, Six Sigma and compliance it is going to be pretty short and full of theory and little fact. That is some pretty weak stuff.
Igore the person and find something you care about.
    Just my opinion.
    Good luck

Hello, I would like to know more about six sigma. Can I get a fair idea, why is six sigma practised and where is its origin?

    Brit and Stan:
Thanks for the help in finding the information and I am working on compiling a summary on Six Sigma but I have a question I feel that section 5 is a little vague on the process can either of you explain this a little clearer?
    Thanks,
    Russ

Below is the fifth step – I pasted for convenience later.  What part don’t you get and maybe I can help…
For the key core and support processes, develop high level process maps based on the concept of SIPOC (Supplier, Input, Process, Output and Customer). The process model developed earlier serves as an excellent resource. Identify key metrics for each of these processes. Return back to the strategy map developed and for each of the process strategic objectives select appropriate measures linking both the customer perspective measures identified in step four to the process perspective measures identified. Select process strategic objectives measures that reflect the customer’s viewpoint. Conventional Six Sigma metrics like DPMO, Sigma Level, or Rolled Throughput Yield may be appropriate. Once the measures for the process strategic objectives are identified, identify measures for the learning and growth perspectives. As discussed earlier, remember to balance in Lead and Lag measures and identify suitable benchmarks for these measures.

    Brit,
I guess I am just trying to figure out what it is saying in general. Is it referring to making process/strategic maps for the strategies that you have laid out in both the charter and the earlier steps while including ideas from the SIPOC? Or have I misread this?
    Thanks,
    Russ

Just wondering if what I said summed it up correctly or if it was completely wrong.

The strategic maps they are referring to are different than process maps.  The visual they used in conjunction with the balanced scorecard titles (financial, customre svc., etc) are the maps they are speaking of.  This occurs before any charter or specific project is selected.
The general gist is that the organization should align its goals/strategies to the operation of the organization and the customers they serve. You have strategic goals leading to operational/departmetn goals leading to process goals.  The major processes, in this model, are mapped out via a SIPOC diagram.  The elements of the SIPOC diagram and the customer requirements dictate the measurements you should have in place.
The types of measuremetns listed were DPMO, sigma level and throughput yield.  Other measures may also be appropriate, depending on the process and audience.
The keys – however you do it:

Make sure the customer (internal or external) is the one dictating the performance level and measure against it.
Perform improvement initiatives that align with the strategic plan (which should also have th ecustomer in mind as well as other factors)
    Hope this helps

    Brit,
I apologize for my lack of response to your last post. I first would like to thank you for the help you have given me in understanding the basics of Six Sigma. School has kicked up over the last few weeks, as well as a few extra projects given to me at work, and while I have a great wish to read more on the subject it looks like I will have to convince work to send me to gain some six sigma training to get the rest of the picture.
    Thanks,
    Russ

No apology necessary.  Your question was a good one and many struggle to determine the best way to attach the formation of a functional six sigma system into the strategic operations of an organization.  Two suggestions:
    1. When choosing a training direction, seek out ones that provide the big picture implementation direction in addition to the details of the six sigma tools.
    2. Look for taking a master bb certification. This is where the answers to your general questions lie.
Regardless – there is no cookie cutter to implementing six sigma and the means to attach the project efforts to the strategic direction of the org.  You will find suggestions and many failure explanations.  The final answer is the means by which you implement six sigma will depend largely on the leadership you have/give and the structure of your organization.
Good Luck, and please keep us informed of your progress.

    Thanks Brit,
I am hoping to get my company to send me to get some SSBB training sometime soon and I will definitely keep you posted on that process.
