    Folks:
As a Black Belt in an organization gearing toward full Six Sigma optimization and initiatives, I’m in search of software packages or tools dealing with Project Tracking vis-a-vis Six Sigma.
Can anyone recommend an approach, vendors or ideas to assist in a buy vs. build analyis?
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Aeneas,There are a few vendors out there providing Six Sigma Project Tracking software. Aeneas,
I too was charged with the difficult task of identifying a software package to assist my company in the tracking and managmement of hundreds of six sigma projects. Mike’s response to your posting recommends a number of vendors who sell similar packaged applications, however I didn’t find any of them to be very helpful, especially given my company’s unique idiosyncracies relative to our six sigma rollout. I actually evaluated a few of these vendors/products: once I determined all the pricing (upwards of $500K plus seat licenses, integration and customization in most cases), I actually decided to hire a custom developer and literally paid only 20-30% of the cost for a fully customized and web-enabled solution which includes project tracking/administration along each phase of the DMAIC/DMADV process, tollgating, workflow, document management, reporting, and lots more.
I mentioned this in another posting last week, but I actually completed a full vendor selection spreadsheet in an attempt to objectify our decision-making process amongst all the features, etc. that we were looking for, along with a SWOT analysis on our chosen vendor. I’m willing to share these if you’d like.
Let me know if I can help any further, or if you’d like me to share the documents with you. Write me at [email protected]

    Aeneas,
I have responded to this type question previously and it is typically a minority position but I am going to do it again because I think these packages deployed early in a program are a huge mistake.
You can read post after poast in this discussion group where the Champions, Sponsors, Process Owners, etc that are responsible to support a program are disengaged. They don’t talk to the BB, GB, MBB’s, etc and will actually go face to face infrequently. When you drop in one of these tools you enable they to report on project status with even less contact.
Basically these data bases are automation of an information gathering process. It isn’t that unusal to work a process and debug it by hand before you automate it. There is no particular reason, should you continue to do this not to do it by hand before you automate. At the very least it will give you a shopping list to identify the correct product.
If you intend to do this anyway http://www.SixSigmaCo.com has one that has roots that go back to 1997. At least the owners understand the capability and have used it enough to know if there are issues when you try to integrate it.
If you have some data bases that currently hold data and you want to link them to scorecards that can be individually tailored to a persons preferences, check out http://www.MarkWoodTech.net. Click on project views > E Portal I & II to get to some examples of the scorecards. The setup will behave similarly to an enterprize system but the system is transparent to the users and the data will stay resident where it is. The guy that owns this sight has worked SS deployments as an MBB since 1996 so he understands the users well.
    Good luck.

There are a number of solutions in this field that are web-based but most simply offer a structured database.  This is fine for monitoring and control of Six Sigma (or change) projects, but misses the real potential of the web to provide online coaching, knowledge management, greater visibility and control etc.
A really creative solution is now offered by Andrew Berger at CI-Culture – they have a web-site: http://www.ci-c.com that you should visit.
As an alternative, some of the latest versions of standard project management software such as MS Project 2002 are offering improved web-based portfolio management, but they are not focused on Six Sigma, and still miss the elearning / KM potential.
    Hope this helps.

We have been round and round the mill with this one. The option we have finally opted for is Power Steering (just ending trial phase). Power Steering have adapted their project tracking software to take in to account the DMAIC lifecycle, tollgate reviews etc. Important point is that this is not Project Management Software but Project Approval and Tracking aimed at delivering on visibility and transparency of the overall project portfolio.

I just had a great discussion with a rep from ProcessModel. Looks very good. Given the nature of “selling” and explaining the proposed improvements, ProcessModel allows design of the flow, allows for entering data at each point throughout the DMAIC phases and provides good (if acceptable data is inputed) simulated desired results. You can get a copy of their demo CD; which is a full version (good for 30 days). [Disclaimer- I have no vested interest in this company] I just like what I saw.

There are various approaches to six sigma software:
    1.  basic tools e.g. MINITAB, MS Project, Visio, Micrografx
    2.  Web based tools e.g. Catalyst,
    3. Project tracking software e.g. ProjX, Power Steering, eTracker
    4.  Portfolio Management tools e.g 6net
    5.  eLearning solutions
    6.  Fully integrated six sigma software solutions such as CI Culture’s iSS tools e.g. http://www.ci-c.com
In general, training companies and consultancies make poor software developers – the two don’t mix.  Be careful about bundled software and training providers – you can’t be good at everything!
At the end of the day you need software that does the job you want to and can be configured to your company’s culture and processes.

I was in a similar situation about two months back. This website https://www.isixsigma.com as well as dicussion forums have really helped to identify the various project tracking softwares like Proj-X, Essenteq, Powersteering, Nucleus etc.. They provide online demo of these software packages. Please take the demo and then weigh their merits and demerits including the pricing factor. Please apply score card and finally decide which one is better. Some for the product features you need to look for is given below :

    Hi,
We have developed a very extensive tool which tracks all Six Sigma Projects. The tool is a web based tool and is used in our company extensively for Tracking Green Belt as well as Black Belt Projects. Our company has done extensive work in Six sigma. The tool not only Tracks all the phases of Six Sigma Project but also has the provision to add/maintain training information of Green Belt and Black belts .
The software is running successfully and can be customized to your needs if required.

I work for Instantis (http://www.instantis.com) and we have just completed deployment of our robust Six Sigma project management, activity tracking, portal, reporting, etc. system for a Fortune50 customer. Our customer went through a detailed analysis of several packages, many of which have been listed in prior responses to this thread, and then decided to go with us. The power of what we do is that we have a base solution that can cater to most standard needs but we can also customize these solutions to fit your exact requirements to the extent you need. It is completely web-based and you can either license it for in-house deployment or you can run it hosted from our datacenter. We are currently engaged with several other prospects for web-based SixSigma project management. It’s a toss up (build your own vs buy a package) We built our own in the end.
I was the project manager for replacing our old Access client-based PetMet System .
I looked at ProjX and ClearReason as well as building our own using an outside web application development firm.  ClearReason was our 1st runner up (they are partnering with Six Sigma Qualtec) but we decided we needed too much customization so decided to go down the path of building our own.
We hired a company called Instantis, they did a great job and we are really happy with pretty much all aspects of our system.  I’d like to think we have one of the best systems out there now, certainly it’s best for us.  I’d be happy to chat with you live if you’d like more detail.

We are currently using a product which tracks our programme and captures the
knowledge generated during projects. It is completely configurable by us, so
we can change it to match our particular Six Sigma programme. We found their offering which has been designed an developmed by working BB’s particularly robust and it provided us with the answers to all the questions we were likely to ask.
Contact Andy Spence at [email protected] for more details.

There are several products on the market that provide solutions specific to six sigma as well as more generic applications.
Please refer to an article in our newsletter that spoke to this topic, and provided some links to company websites that should help in your search.

    Rod,
This post of yours seems very self-promotion oriented. I see no extra value from your “newsletter” link that isn’t already contained in this thread.
So really, what’s the deal? Are you just trying to promote your site by thinly cloaking it within a “newsletter” link?

Microsoft has what appears to be a very powerful tool they introducing called Microsoft Accelerator for Six Sigma.  It offers customized dashboard views for projects and links directly to HR and financial systems.  It has a gerat tool that makes creating 4-block reports a breeze.
Won’t be available for a couple of months, yet

We have been working with several Fortune 100 Companies to develop a Six Sigma (Process Excellence) accelerator package which includes a Project Tracking solution integrated to MS Project.HandySoft is a leading Business Process Managment Platform that supports the DMAIC and other PE oriented methodologies.  Project tracking/management is just one area that we impact.  I have to agree with BB’s assesment, prepackaged Project Tracking software solutions are very expensive and typically ask you to change the way you work or manage projects.  Business Process management solutions enable you to configure the software to fit your needs and integrate into your current systems to hopefully save you time effort and money.Best regards,John Wylie – [email protected]

Is this solution deployed or still slideware?  When will it really be available for a large enterprise customer?  I’m really tired of hearing about products before they really exist and spending time sorting through whether it’s been deployed and is enterprise ready.
There must be a product out there that deploys quickly (minimal configuration, operational in a month, preferably an ASP model), that has scaled to 5,000+ users and 5,000+ projects?  The number of projects for us could double to 10K.  I’m also looking for a product with references that has been deployed successfully for at least 18 months. We won’t be a beta site.
The vendors we have met with are coming out with new, untested products.  We don’t want to be the selected vendor’s first big customer (and their largest implementation).  We’ve read that chapter before.
The vendors all sound good but what will happen if half the users go on line on Friday afternoon to update their projects?
I just saw a press release from one of the newer vendors and the press release says their customer only has 250 projects.  We will have over five to ten thousand projects with a significant document repository.

You can use minitab quality companion extension for project tracking. Or As far as I know MSproject will have a six sigma accelerator for this purpose.

Just come across a company called i-solutions (http://www.i-solutionsglobal.com) – appear to have a solution in this area and can offer both standard licensing and asp hosting as referred to above.  I see they can offer web-based demos and have a number of major partners signed up.

Looks like yet another software company trying to make a buck off of six sigma. I don’t see any information on their site about six sigma and their product’s capabilities, aside from a press release or two. How serious could they be? I’d rather spend my shareholder’s hard earned money on a solution that was built for the six sigma industry.
    Just my opinion.

Either I’m looking at a different site or we are talking at cross purposes.  See Visitor resources for example – white papers on Six Sigma, pdf’s on the products – this doesn’t smack of the standard IT stuff to me.  Admit its not the best site I’ve seen but it appears to have some substance behind it.
Some of the info in the product & methodologies is quite detailed as well…..
Understand the scepticism about IT firms come across that many times before.

I have seen the Instantis ASP solution, and from that experience, it is to be avoided at all costs. To put it very politely, it is not ready for prime time. It needs a massive rework.

It is very slow, has no workflow, not at all intuitive, has no revision tracking capability, no collaboration, no project management, no automation, etc, etc.that I could see. Using it is not a time saver; I could get by faster doing everything by pen and paper, or just using a combination of Excel, Project, Powerpoint and Word.It just appears to be a collection of web pages that someone has stitched together, and does not appear to have much automation or sophistication “under the hood”.

For a look at a great Bolt-on application to manufacturing equipment that will prove valuable and work with six sigma go to
http://www.operonsystems.com and check out Redhawk.  A great tool to capture real time data, which when used will help with process quailty not just product quality.

Microsoft has a solution called Microsoft Six Sigma Accelerator. The solution is compose by Office products (Project Server, SharePoint Services, Outlook,…). DMAIC is introduced in the project server in order to track all projects. It’s an interesting solution for MS users once you do not have additional cost

They’re not all that expensive. Check out the Nov/Dec 2006 issue of iSixSigma Magazine. They did a nice write up on various alternatives that things to watch out for.
