My question is How does six sigma compare to iso 14001? And is it possible for a company to implement both techniques to thier business practices. Thanks

It is my understanding (and I am just starting to investigate ISO 14001 myself) that ISO 14001 is to environmental standards as QS9000 is to quality standards.  Some believe that ISO 14001 is going to become more important as companies require their suppliers to get certified.
Developing a quality or environmental standard (and following it in reality, not just on paper) can certainly be done in conjunction with Six Sigma.  By putting standards in place and making sure that they are followed, you would actually be laying the groundwork for further improvement efforts which can be attacked with Six Sigma tools.

As we know, ISO 14001 is an Environmental Management System (EMS).
Six Sigma is an improvement tools (or system).
ISO 14001 require you to improve your EMS. You can use any method to improve. Most ISO 14001 companies do not use Six Sigma. They use other more simple methods. However, some Six Sigma companies with 14001 certified apply Six Sigma to improve their EMS with good results.

Two previous posters have the right idea.  At my firm, we use all three; ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and 6 Sigma.  First two are documents describing a quality management and an environmental management system respectively.  Third is a toolkit to improve performance and reduce variation in any area your top management cares to aim the Black Belts at.  In my (not so humble) opinion, ISO 14001 is a little over-focused on regulatory compliance rather than environmental impact minimization, but heh, that’s where the “teeth” for using the standard come from.
Many things about ISO 9001 make it easier to implement 6 Sigma, if the system you have is a well-designed, relatively efficient system that is being followed. There are actually procedures for most things, you can reference them easily, and when the procedure has changed, there’s a mechanism for getting the word out.  The BB doesn’t have to drag the team through this process from scratch every time.
