The Six Sigma methodology is outstanding in reducing a product and/or services variation and defects so that the quality levels meet customer requirements. So while a great methodology to increase effectiveness, some of its challenges include not having as many tools and techniques to address inefficiencies. The Lean methods did a better job to address speed, flow, just-in-time inventory management, etc…
Therefore Lean Six Sigma has evolved as a more complete methodology and toolset for many practitioners. There are also many additional approaches that also produce outstanding results, which are often integrated into Lean Six Sigma, such as TRIZ, ITIL, PMI, SCOR, and CAP, to name a few.
All these various business management changing methodologies exist to address certain segments that while Six Sigma has proven successful, it was less complete.
i.e. SCOR (Supply Chain Operations Reference) is the main standard for supply chain management but is even more powerful when integrated with Lean Six Sigma methods! Or ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is the best practice in IT Service Management Practices, including call centers, onsite support, procurement, networking, asset management, etc… Its so much more effective with the data rich and efficiencies delivered via Lean Six Sigma designs.
My 2-cents,
Warm Regards

BrandonParticipant@BrandonInclude @Brandon in your post and this person will
be notified via email.Akash, that’s like asking if there are any weaknesses with Mechanical Engineering.
No, no inherent weaknesses in the disciplines themselves. There are numerous potential pitfalls to the implementation of six sigma just as there are to the implementaiton of Mech Eng. or any other body of knowledge.
It’s all a bunch of skill sets that have to be integrated with change mngt., performance evals, mngt commitment and on and on.
Skills in and of themselves are just that – skills. How you use them will determine the level of success you achieve.0September 27, 2007 at 5:20 am #161854What is a methodology? Sounds like a pretty high falutin word to make things sound more complicated or more important than they really are.

The word methodologies help simplify the project management aspect of six sigma or lean six sigma. We use the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) phases where we execute various approaches and use of tools to produce teh deliverables due at the end of each phase – usually called a tollgate or a gate review. There are other methodologies as well such as the DMADV or DMEDI, etc… that are used for process designs.
Methodology is a also a fancy consulting term we used to help sell this high falutin results program. hehehe
Warm Regards,

Ques: Are there any weaknesses to the Six Sigma methodology?
Answer: ‘No’, provided you apply it in the ‘right’ manner (use appropriate tools), for the right concerns (follow project selection criterias).
Ques: Do any problems occur when you implement six sigma?
Answer: ‘Yes’. Numerous problems and at various stages. In fact it is a ‘pre-requisite’ for successful deployment. How do you expect to perform, when everything is happening as per your expectation. The surprise elements are the instances, when you get the challenge to explore your change management skills.
So…go ahead All the best!
