What is the best software package or add in for reading Excel data and automatically updating the associated graphics?

Minitab has been an excellent analysis tool, but we need to automate our Process Control Systems to as close to real time as possible.

I would appreciate feedback on everyone’s knowledge and(or) experience

You can inport / export data in Minitab just like a Microsoft product. You can create macros to do repetitive tasks. The help menus are excellent for guidance as well as Minitab phone support,

    John,

If your primary interest is realtime SPC, then a useful product out there is Infinity QS by LKS. IQS provides online realtime Pareto, Box and Whisker, MSA, and other analysis. It can support Access, SQL, and Oracle data structures. If your work involves dealing with the FDA, then IQS also supports 21 CFR, Part 11; the control of electronic records. Feel free to look at their product, and I believe download a demo copy. Search on Infinity QS.

    Hope this helps,

    Ken

    Hi
If it is basic SPC tools like Trend Charts , Histograms that u want , then you can use Excel itself… to create these graphs for you…
However if you do want additional graphs and analysis done then I would suggest that instead of entering the data in excel u can also enter the data into the Minitab worksheet directly .. The way I see it it take all of 10 seconds to cut paste the data from Excel to Minitab in any case
    Regards

In Version 5 of STATGRAPHICS Plus, we added the capability to link a StatFolio (our basic document) to various data sources, including Excel. You can set the program to poll the Excel file at regular intervals and automatically update any charts you have created. These charts can also be automatically posted to a web server whenever they are updated.

You can find a white paper describing this approach at http://www.statpoint.com/rscenter/six_sigma.htm.

    John,

My guess on this is that you want to go with a real time SPC program. It is not too difficult to automate some tasks within stat software, but it isn’t really what it is designed to do. What type of graphics are you trying to update? Do you want the data to be easily imported back and forth from Minitab? How is the data being generated? Send me an e-mail, and I can get more information for you.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

You can do all this from Minitab with Macros, then get someone to write you a Vbasic program to do it all automatically. I created a similar program about 5 years
ago to capture process efficiency and interruptions and plot as I-MR and C charts.
Step 1. Wrote a macro to update the Minitab worksheet once a shift from the database approximately 30 minutes after the shift ended. Used a Vbasic program to schedule and invoke the macro under Windows NT.
Step 2. Wrote a custom Minitab command to create the charts. This command enabled a process engineer to go into Minitab and create charts for his particular machines. Engineers helped in debugging.
Step 3. Wrote another macro to automatically step through each machine, create the charts, and store them as Jpegs in a folder (replacing the old charts). Used a program called Winbatch, but I’m pretty sure after 5 years there are better programs out there.
Step 4. Created an Intranet web page with menued hot links which pointed at the charts in the folder.

If you need to do real time SPC and data collection, AND you are currently using MINITAB, then may I suggest you look into the Hertzler Systems software. Their website is http://www.hertzler.com .

Not only do they have powerful SPC screening and data filtering/summarization tools, but they have the unique advantage of being (I think) the only real time SPC software that has partnered with Minitab Inc. to provide a transparent method of moving data from the Hertzler software into MINITAB. No manual conversions. No exporting. No importing. All you do is click on one command in the Hertzler software and up comes MINITAB with the data already formatted correctly.

If all you need to do is create electronic control charts, then you might be able to do that with less capable software, but if you need to have a system that can collect real time data, organize it, create control charts, filter it, and provide easy access to the data for future improvement projects, then look at the Hertzler Systems software.

P.S. – I don’t work for them – I’ve just been doing a lot of research on SPC/data collection software lately.

For real time data collection you may want to look at a software wedge for inputting your data directly to Excel for anlaysis with Excel or by Minitab.  An excellent source for an easy to use wedge is, http://www.microridge.com.  If you are using gages or other serial devices you may be able to connect to your serial port or use an interface (see MicroRidge).  The software wedge takes the incoming serial data and transfers it directly to your Windows application.

You can look at the products from Labtronics such as Collect and BalanceTalk that allow you to collect data from a large variety of devices right into Excel or Windows software. The web site is at http://www.labtronics.com
