    Hi all,
I am a newly trained BB but very weak in using statistical tools for data analysis, etc.  I would like to know if there are any resources, magazine or books to help me improve in this area, hopefully they are easily understood and comprehended?

Might sound funny but I’d try “Statistics for Dummies” (Nothing personal – that’s the title)
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764554239/qid=1091690448/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-3875519-5763851
or Statistics for the Utterly Confused
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0071350055/qid=1091690448/sr=ka-2/ref=pd_ka_2/103-3875519-5763851
I have recommended those to my Black Belts in the past.

I have found “Statistics for Managers” by Levin and Rubin to be of quite some help.

Sooooo, looking at the previous two postings, can I conclude:
    Manager := Dummy
    or
    Manager := Utterly Confused
(although perhaps in some organizations both are true)

I am also concerned that we have a BB who is admittedly very weak in statistical knowledge.  Wonder what organization or certifying body annointed this person a BB with the expectation that he/she will be qualified to provide coaching to teams and team members.  I am glad they admit their failings but pity those teams who will receive coaching from a quality professional carrying around a Stat for Dummies book.  This reinforces the need for a recognized and accepted certification to assure companies that a BB possesses some consistent baseline knowledge.  Previous posts have taken the position that a BB doesn’t just need technical skills but leadership and facilitation skills as well. Agreed, but those need to be built upon the foundation of some technical and statistical proficiency and not be a substitute for it.

    Darth,
Based on your posts, I am guessing the BB mentioned in your post is actually you.

Great, here is goes again.  Darth will now tell you that he’s looked up the posts under “Jim” and they amount to squat and challenge you to say something both technically proficient and on-target – you won’t be able to ,and you will get nasty with him, he will tell you that you should grow up, you will get even more nasty with him, and the Moderator will close the thread.  Thanks a lot Jimbo.

Don’t have to….you did a great job capturing the concept, thanks.  Just one minor correction, I have never told someone to “grow up”.  I have suggested they debate the content but as you aptly pointed out, Jim is hardly likely to have the capacity to do that, so no sense repeating that refrain.  Please include the Peter guy in future posts as well.  Thanks for your assistance.

Nothing personal here, but some of these comments are rediculous. I think some of you really need to take a step backwards and evaluate what you write before you submit it. These discussion threads are designed to help people not harrass them with senseless debate.
Its very simple – your comments are Non-Value Added and honestly, not welcomed. Please try to remain professional in the future or find some other forum to express your ultra-aggressive, hindering behaviors.

    Darth,
Jim’s retort was a little strong but let me say this.  Ask any MBB who has certified BB’s and they should tell you there is a distribution of BB’s abilities just like MBB’s have a distribution of abilities.  I’ve certified BB’s who were weaker on the some statistical tools but knew to follow the methodology and knew to ask for help and knew how to drive results.  I’ve also had other BB’s certified who were MUCH weaker on the softer skills, e.g. change management, but fantastic on statistics.
Depending on the support structure of course, I’d prefer a BB, GB, etc. who was a great change agent and had to get help on the statistical tools in my organization. That’s because some help is available.  Remember, BB’s can only improve with time assuming they have a supportive atmosphere.
I might pontificate here a bit but I will never openly criticize a person–just show why I disagree with their ideas.  I find it more conducive to a good strings of posts.  Although if you haven’t visited here much, there are periods where overly tough posts are created and they have started some of the longest strings of posts.

To be fair, the original poster stated that he was newly trained.  I don’t believe that he stated that he was certified yet.  With that in mind, I can sympathize with his situation.
In my previous job, I worked as a MBB for a Fortune 500, and we called everyone a BB from the moment they stepped into class.  There were a great number of those whom I taught that did not have a strong statistical background.  As such, I had to perform double duty with them: increase their statistical abilities and impart the DMAIC methodology.
With that said, I have to agree with Darth that I, too, would be concerned about a certified BB who claimed to be weak in their statistical knowledge.

    John, it works like this:

    Time is Money
    Knowledge is Power
From basic physics: Power = Work/Time
Substitute Money for Time and Knowledge for Power to get: Knowledge = Work/Money
Solving for Money, we get: Money = Work/Knowledge
Therefore: as knowledge approaches 0, money approaches infinity, regardless of work done.
    Does that help?

I happened upon the JO’s, Jim, Bill, and Peter, and they were on their way out of the Wal-Mart where I work as a greeter with fresh cans of spray paint. They had receipts so I couldn’t stop them. Sorry.

    “Dr.” Phil,

I wish you’d have stopped us at the door.  Jim, Bill, and Peter and I got outside and started shaking the cans, laughing, whacking each other on the head with them and sticking them down each other’s pants, well – two cans blew up (Bill’s having trouble walking and Jim hurt his hand – it was the same can that hurt both) it was a mess, we had paint everywhere, then we started painting Darth’s wall and you wouldn’t have believed the acrimonious tiff we got into over spelling and punctuation – much like our postings.  Anyway, we’ll have to cleanup and make another spray paint run in order to get enough of our thoughts on the wall that folks will understand it’s Darth’s problem, not ours.  We are just protesting, speaking up for the regular guys against the smart-alecky “Dr.’s”

I apologize for my absence from the forum today, I know to be viewed as a true expert you need to do the following:
    1.)  Correct everyone’s spelling
2.)  Reference that you have a Phd multiple times (to make one feel better about oneself – akin to the bald man in the corvette)
3.)  Rapidy respond to others posts the second after they post
4.)  Copy and paste responses to questions from Minitab help function
5.)  Degrade others for posting questions that have been asked before, yet still refer them to the search function on this site (I mean come on, if you are that offended, why do you bother replying at all…it’s like some sickness you have where you cannot stop yourself)
6.)  Downplay the significance of any other organizations six sigma efforts except BOA.
Darth – the average guy’s have spoken – get lost.

Funny, when you guys left the store, I thought there was going to be trouble in the parking lot, those “Hate Darth” T-shirts, the “Hello my name is {Jim, Peter, Bill}” adhesive name tags, and that moped without the seat that you all rode in on. It sounds as if Bill and Jim have a very “special” relationship, well, with the, you know. I didn’t see you though, were you trailing with the newly purchased Webster’s Dicktonary and the ex-lax to keep you regular? ;-)
Regular guys, my a%%. Either contribute, even something positive, or sit on the sidelines. Laugh, cry, or read. No need to poke the big bear. Yea, he shouldn’t have fired them years ago. But he did, or someone else did, and let’s get on with it. And please don’t sue Wal-Mart.  :-)

Thanks for your post to me. I’ll be happy to address it.
Petey, ya sound a bit whiney. True experts don’t whine, that should be number one. Who cares about the rest of your list 1-6.
If you’re really this upset about it, and not just posting this in fun, you take this medium too seriously. Put your own neck out there, and tell your own story. Or did yours start with “As a bald man in a corvette…” God knows there is enough wrong information being passed around on this site, I hope people are actually smart enough to know the difference. But it is here one minute, and gone the next.
Maybe you should take a page from “Regular Guy” and get some E-L relief yourself. You’ll feel like a new man. ;-)
Darth can take care of himself. But if there is real animosity toward him because of this supposed list you’ve included, it’s a tragedy. :-)

Oh, I dunno, Phil, maybe it was the, “Regular guys, my a%%. Either contribute, even something positive, or sit on the sidelines.”, it just seemed a little harsh and argumentative.  You know what I mean?   I think it was the “a%%”, that hit me as unnecessary and kind of aggressive.  I don’t speak in mathematical symbols when I’m annoyed and hate to be addressed that way myself.  How would you like it if I (and I’m not saying I would) called you a big ##% and added a delta or two?  Yeah, I thought you’d feel that way.   Oh, and thanks for the comment about the font, it was my 12 point emphatic font.

I can tell that you are no really regular regular guy.
I should have used a$$, which is a monetary/financial symbol, rather than the strictly mathematical symbol, but it looked too much like the word I was trying not to use in text.
Harsh and argumentative can be my style, but so is funny. You neglected to mention if you thought my post was funny, because now I am sensitive about that. And at least I use full paragraph’s like you, which brings me around to my original point. You are no really really regular guy. Was it actually you who posted the regular guy, et al. posts or are you “hitching a ride on somebody else’s meat wagon?” I’ll bet you were not even responsible for the first posts.
Are you wearing some sort of animal cranial ornamentation at this moment, Sir? And please don’t mention my big ##% because it is a source of anguish and I exercise and exercise and exercise and still can’t lose the weight. It must be this Fatkins program I’m on.
I suspect that you have sadly underestimated the font size, too. Seemed more a 14 point… I wish the web site had Cooper.
Give the Ex-Lax a couple of hours and you’ll be a really really really regular guy and a new man. Infact, use that “nom de plume” when it all gets sorted out.
You are no regular guy, albeit maybe 1% short of a full french fries box.

Oh, you are clever.   Muffin is still atop and I, as many of my left-coast peers do, hitch rides at will.   We hairy ragamuffins looking pitifully at passing motorists and keyboardists.  [Besides it was ginger lemon flavored Fleet Phospho-soda, Ex-Lax is so bourgeois.]
But to the point, I stand ready to represent the rest of the really really very regular guys on the forum that have been consistently vilified just because they are lurking non-contributing stalkers, after all, this is the U.S. of A. and we are about unity, diversity, and individuality – wonder how that works?  Almost sounds like mutually exclusive national values – but, nonetheless, I stand at the ready.  If you have been criticized and hurt by fellow forum members and feel disenfranchised and inexplicably angry, come with me to Berkeley some undefined month, bring your road kill animal cranial adornments (opossums and raccoons tend to adhere well) and stand united with me against those prissy PhD’s from non-rigorous programs.   Stand united.  Raise your right fists in the air in protest (no, the other fist, that’s it), but Stand United!   (yes you were funny)   J

Phil, I too suspected that the anonymous 1% guy was behind some of those posts.  Please take note that SSMBB has slipped back into the picture in my other thread.  Now there is a foursome of spray can painters.  Poor Stevo will be left out in the cold now.  Unless, there is but one schizoid with many personalities.  I am hoping that at least one of the group will be able to provide an articulate and compelling answer to the questions I asked in the Control Chart thread.  Bet they just hate it when they are asked to contribute.  I thought the temptation of teaching something to the BBB might be too much to ignore.  Any bets?….content or insult.

    Darth:
SSMBB may be the nom de plume of “the band of regular guys” but I have not any real proof. I suspect that this person of intelect posts those directed at you for sport, some kind of taunting mechanism which gives him an “sudo-statistical thrill” while taunting me to see how “fast the monkey” can dance. And I am running out of steam. I have to work all day and say hello to folks coming in and out of the store and I don’t have the energy to do this heavy lifting.
I imagine that there is at least a dozen screen names that this 1% fellow has used in his efforts thus far. He is a moving target. I will refer to him in our confidential communications as codename “Stealth.”
I suspect that the original trio of spray canners leaves room for 1% as the standard bearer, maybe except first mate Peter, who at least was successful in listing his objections. 1% joining forces with these people means that eventually 1% will be eliminated by a mutiny because he is far to smart and funny to be able to hold their allegance. Eventually the three musketeers will have to turn on the leader.
1% seems to time his entry and cover his moves, simply for the sport of it. Nothing is more difficult to track than the animal who torments for sport.
My advice to you, as the forces grow, have somebody test your food before you eat it.
FYI, last week Stevo said he was a loyal Budwieser on Augustus’er, so I guess that he can help find a yellow-belt in the system to help you out lunch in the corporate cafeteria. A low potential YB, of course.
By the way, sorry about letting Dr. D’s exit slip last weekend. I figured you already knew. The good news is I hear that he’s been reincarnated as a almost 9 year old Tibetan girl, living in the foothills of the Himalaya, and she’s passed Brue’s 36 hour Black Belt course! A great place for the guru to set up a new practice.

Ah, so we meet again, my clever foe. Regular guy my Fatkins enlarged seat, (less offensive, I hope). I suspected it was you right from the start, yet didn’t have the evidence until your mastery of prose showed through by using the skills my of my well tuned “word-sniff-o-meter.”.
You left-coast big school sandal wearing, establishment revolting geniuses better get in line. If your efforts for change, besides your bandana, mean anything, you need a theme song.
How about that old 70’s staple, “Belive it or not I’m walking on Air” for the song that brings the masses together, uniting the real very regular guys on the forum? That toe tapping ditty is just what the doctor, (not a PhD) ordered to help smooth the over testosterone of the big truck driving, tattoo’ed, facial hair, all my emotional problems make me unlovable issues of really really very regular guys on the forum.
And should you not have a test to prove the fact that you are in fact a lurking non-contributing stalker? Mr. Moderater, please insert the following window.
I am a Lurking Non-Contributing Stalker in this forum and a USA citizen. Sorry, USCC  and the LNCS forum rules can not apply to non-citizens. But please continue to purchase our goods and we’ll send our jobs over to you. Kindest regards, MHO, etc.

Our values include such gems as, “You Suck” in person, but one should be prepared to duck once a regular guy turns around. This is a medium that only allows a certain level of expression. Therefore certain levels of tolerance should be accepted.
There is a funny story that John von Neuman used to tell, about his memories in the old country before WWI.
(Recounting a Berlin street scene during the First World War.) A man at the corner yells, repeatedly, “The Kaiser is an idiot.” Two police agents appear and arrest him for high treason. “But I was referring to the Austrian Kaiser, not our Kaiser,” the man cries. The officers reply, “You can’t fool us! We know who the idiot is!”
Pack your California campuses with all the disenfranchised and inexplicably angry souls you want, because we’ll have Jerry Springer out there to spotlight the chair throwing for a week on his program.
Prissy, or not, Rigorous or not, Svelt buttocks or Fatkins, or not. We are all one people, people of quality. {Really I dislike the term quality, as it stinks of a failed attempt at better “something”}. How about we are people united, {no that doesn’t work, how do we incorporate our animal cranial adornments, and such?} This is making me a “mean old man + violated.” That’s it, we’ll call it Stan United, in honor of Stan, a meaner less kinder Stan before the curtain was removed last month.
Those were the good old days for Darth, huh? When all this regular guys anger was directed at the posts of Stan, and not him….
