What is the usual tenure for a BB? I am hearing from different sources that most BB positions are only temporary. In some places, that is because the BB moves into another position, perhaps leadership, so that their BB experience was a training ground. In others, I hear that it is just natural to replace them after a period of time. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and experience.

    GG,
It tends to run around 24 months. Look at your break even point.
    Just my opinion.
    Good luck

I have seen 12 – 32 months. In my experience (a GE susidiary) those who use the BB period as a carrer step start  networking immediatly and stay about 12 months (sometimes not even that). Of those who stay 2-3 years at least 50% leave the company.
I think that is a problem with six sigma implementation in many companies.
12 months often are not enough to reach the brek even point. And it is a pity that experienced BBs leave.
What are your experiences and opi nions here?

    Simple Guy,
That was why I made the comment about break even. At the end of the day it is business and for someone to expect to get moved because they checked off a box is a bad business decision.
At 12 months (since training takes around 5-6 months they still don’t know much and haven’t really been tested to the point that they trust the methodology) it is pretty quick. There are some that just don’tlike it and there needs to be some point where you open the door. There is also burn out – whoever is responsible for that person should be aware enough to see it. That is why we run a fairly tight span of control.
Not many want to do this for a career. Planning the move back to the general population really needs to be on a person by person basis.
Our current deployment the BB’s careers are the management responsibility of the Chief Executive Council – they are considered that valuable an asset.
    Regards

In my opinion BBs should stay at least 2 years, time for them to get all the benefits of the methodology and in some case get a better and deeper understanding of the major processes of the company
(especially for those who work in a transactionnal area)
Another point is the company strategy and culture:  if BB are, right at the start, identified as future managers, they will stay 2 to 3 years maximum.  In some company where a technical culture lives aside the management culture, it is possible to stay BB for 3 – 4 years and then move to an MBB position or technical expertise
