There are risks ofΒ each project, but what are the risk issues of a technology project?

    M. Abar,
Regarding your question: are you asking in the context of a Six Sigma ProjectΒ you are undertaking, or is this a general curiosity question (perhaps for an academic paper or something similar)?

    The Unknown Risks!
Of course if you can prevent them from happening in the first place, that would be best, but remember they’reΒ unknowns. We don’t know what we don’t know. Thus, how will we know? By asking some key questions. Begin with the following:
    1. What can possibly go wrong?
    2. How will I/we know? (The whistles, alarms, and bells going off!)
    3. What do we do? (How will we respond? Not react!)
Find others that have worked on similar projects and learn from their lessons. Why? Because, you want to:Β

    M. Abar,
Let me give you our definition of a technology project to make sure we are speaking about the same thing.
We can do what we call an instantaeous capability study which freezes most of the variation and gives an estimate of perfect control i.e. the capability of the technology. If that study produces 3 sigma or less then we consider it to be a basic technology issue. Poor technology shows up two ways 1. in control 2. out of control. Obviously Poor technology with control issue is about as bad as it gets.
The basic risk with a technology type project is that what you need may not exist. If it does not exist you will end up making a decision to optomize the poor technology or you can start into the innovation, invention, creativity issues (check out the web site http://www.realinnovation.com).
Technology projects tend to take longer simply because it is difficult to schedule a technology breakthrough (we don’t buy into the SS projects take 6 months BS so for us longer means that they are running over 90 days). The type of industry also affects it. If you have one of the old slow moving industries or a high tech fast moving industry makes a difference.
    Just my opinion.
    Good luck
