Hi All
I am new to 6 sigma and just underwent training on DMAIC. Being from the technical side(software) could any one suggest me a theme/topic whereby I could implement a Green Belt project and improve upon.

Did you attend the training in-house or through consulting firm? This greatly affects the selection of projects for right application of the methodology. Was the training up to the mark? Is there any BB or MBB evaluated the training effectiveness.
Areas you may think of in software:
1. Improvement in Design and Code Review Effectiveness
2. Reduction in Coding defects / Defect Insertion rate in Coding Phase
3. Improvement in Test Case coverage accuracy
4. Improvement in Development Productivity
5. Other support functions in IT industry
Above ones are just to name a few. These are flown down by using Critical to Quality (CTQ) life cycle method that starts from Customer Needs.
As you must be knowing, most software failures are traceable to three areas –
1. “Requirements Failures” – they reflect needs not captured in the beginning or incorrectly understood, which lead to significant rework cost late in the software development cycle.
2. “Estimation Failures” – Overly conservative estimates or understimates of both effort and defects, leading to long delays and cost overruns, project cancellation. You can initiate a project that studies historical data and develops a prediction model that closely follows patterns described by the processes followed.
3. “Execution Failures” – they lead to poor software quality, high reworks at the back-end. Rework can almost cost 40% of the total project cost. So you can find how much is the current Rework/Fix cost and if it is highly impacting your Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) then pick up this opportunity as a project that targets reduction in Rework / Fix Cost by say 20%.
I believe these are just a few common yet non-negligible areas to focus on in the beginning using Six Sigma. As your company matures to higher capability levels in process areas you may discover some different opportunities.
All the Best !0March 15, 2004 at 11:31 am #63370Hi Hemant
The training was in house, was very detailed w.r.t DMAIC. And it was conducted by a BB, who was very good.
The topics mentioned by u , seem to be very interesting. Thanks for the same.
It would be helpfull if u could give some more insights into these.

I am new to metrics in a software environment…what are some of the more effective ways you have found to measure:
1. Improvement in Design and Code Review Effectiveness
2. Reduction in Coding defects / Defect Insertion rate in Coding Phase
3. Improvement in Test Case coverage accuracy
thanks!0June 11, 2004 at 12:00 pm #63506Dear Hemant,
The areas suggested by you where one can take six sigma projects in software development are really useful and would result in huge benefits , if done properly.
However, you would appreciate, that in a software development organization ( specially in a large one) , the support functions are as important as the main core function. By support function, I mean recruitment, administration, training etc. There are normally opportunities for improvement in these functions and processes , which will also add big benefits to the bottom-line.
It seems that you have good experience in implementing six sigma in software industry. Could you share some insights in implementing six sigma in support processes ? Is there any benchmark data on sigma level on which these support processes ( and/or sub-processes under the umbrella of these broad function) actually work across the software industry.
Thank you,
