I am a PG student in Industrial Engineering from a university in Melbourne, Aus. This is regarding implementation of ERP system in Small and Medium sized Enterprises.
I would like to know how a consultant (ERP consultant) can use FMEA as their tool for the effective implementation of ERP. Is it possible to use it for determining the probable causes of failures and determining the preventive actions and how? Is there any other similar quality tools which can be used while implementing ERP? Please advice…0October 6, 2004 at 7:19 am #108622

I have been the implementation manager for SAP 3 times and I am now a global deployment manager for Six Sigma.
The key to both processes is behavioural change.
Both use fact based tools such as FMEA or process mapping to convince the relevant teams to adopt and follow new business processes. My advice for SAP and other ERP’s is to follow the standard templates, avoid workarounds and interfaces like the plague, and never accept “we are different” as a reason not to change behaviour. All processes work the same way, which is why SAP and Six Sigma can apply standard methodologies to improve all applications. It is our personal lens that creates the illusion that we are different. In fact processes do not care! We have to conform to the required inputs in order to achieve the predicted outputs?
Have fun

Thank you very much for the quick response. Though your reply endorses my belief that FMEA can be a potent tool in ERP implementation I would like to know more about its actual application with real cases and examples if possible. You have referred to the standard methodologies that SAP and Six Sigma adopt to follow new business processes and I would like to know more about these standard methodologies. As I have no prior experience in FMEA or other similar quality tools used in ERP implementation I would be grateful if you could elaborate more about the tools that can be used. Are there any standard templates that can be used? Thanking you in advance,
