    This question must seem oddly simple, but I have been unable to find a clear answer or outline. 
    The company I work for employs two master black belts who are somewhat improperly utilized.  One MBB has suggested that he form a training program to create a few black belts (from his engineering group) who will then take the exam and become certified.  He used to work for a very large corporation that had a structure in place which did this, his sole job was to teach and follow through.  Thus, I have been assigned the job of finding out how he can recreate this program at our company.  Teaching select individuals who will then go on to complete projects, take the exam and become certified.  However, I can’t find any information outside of simply “taking a class”.  I would have thought there would be a rough outline somewhere… but no luck.  Can anyone help please! Thank you for taking the time to read this.

    There are no standards in the LSS industry – define and conduct whatever program you wish; that’s what everybody else does.

    Jon,
    I’d suggest benchmarking against firms with established standards. Most internal certs include a period of intruction, followed by monitored action (project(s)), a measure against “key behaviors” and a cert board, rather than a test. The Cert board would normally look for 3 main things:
    1) Does the Candidate know the material?
    2) have they applied it successfully via projects with bottom line results 9cost/quality/delivery)?
    3) Have they also demonstrated impactful Change Agency/Change mgmt principles?

    There are some major factors to consider with this.   First off, is the upper management support for the training in place?  Without it, you won’t have the commitment in people, or time, to do this effectively.  Secondly, this has to be aligned with the key project objectives of the organization, so after training the personnel can begin the projects.  Again, will they have the support to take time from their current jobs in order to do this?   This is likely to be the toughest issue to address, and you need to get the time commitments up front, or face the potential of loss of resources as time goes by.
    By virtue of having two MBB’s on staff, I would suggest you both pitch the plan for this training and the subsequent project development, and how you two will facilitate these projects.

    Jon, are you asking as to how to run a successful deployment, training program or obtain certification? It is unclear as to your objective. Suggest you write a Problem Statement and Objective Statement just to begin this exercise. Make certain you have articulated your objectve before beginning anything – use what you’ve learned.

    Ask this guy, Master Black Belt who worked for a Large Company with a structure in place.

    Usually, a pre-req for a MASTER BB, is ability to teach and successful with projects.
