I would be very interested to hear how different companies have deployed the use of Minitab for Six Sigma activities into their organisations. What training methods were used? Who did the training etc? I am based in the UK.

    Peter,

We incorporated minitab into our six sigma training. We first teach the theory, manually calculating results, then open our laptops and proceed with minitab utilizing home grown data sets.
Our MBB’sare required to do the training

    Peter,
I work for a division of GE. We do the same thing as Ron.

    Theory
Hand calcs (where appropriate and not too time consuming)
Practice (step by step with minitab on computers in class)
Questions (lots ‘o hand holding for those not computer literate)

    Hi,
In response to the training done at GE, here is my experience.  The great things that GE did while it got its people involved at the Green Belt level are:
    (1) Itd id not run this training as a course in statistics-to accomplish this they had operators, finance, commercial, engineers, scientists involved in the same training class
    (2)  GE expected that people would learn the use of Minitab through application and by setting high standards on the review process the issue of dealing with Minitb was insignificant because the focus was on the proceess improvement
    (3) Finally the class was never one of those where the luxury of a laptop per person was the norm of the day even though having a laptop would have still produced a phenomenal ROI.  Thus, we all finished training, went to  breakroom used a PC (4 groups at 5 per group).  Then came back to class and then broke after some time for minitab and tool application.  The goal was to treat it like a six sigma training and not Minitab 101.  That can be done separately if needed.
    (4) Finally, the message that came across to everyone was “I get to go to six sigma training,” rather than “I have to go to Six Sigma training.”  That was the breakpoint where people realized it was a privilege and not a punishment.  Usually the belts realize this phase change when they hit the analyze-improve phase as they commonly experience the process improvement through several action items and then get excited about the real stuff.
Hope this would help you address any minitab issues and how this was dealt with in a very mature fashion at least 5 years ago.  Thus with laptops it should be a breeze and a blessing today as far as minitab is concerned.

    Ladies & Gentlemen,
It appears to me that use of Minitab is familiar only amongst the people or the organization involved with Six sigma.
When I contacted for training in Mintab, I was told it is offered as a corporate level training.
For persons like me who is interested in minitab, is there is any self learning tool (or) a web based traning programme.
    Please help.
    Regards

There is a certain amount of training available from within MiniTab – look under the Help menu – Tutorials – and take it from there.  They are not a bad start – and also useful for refreshers.

It may be possible for you to take afvantage of the 30 day free download from the web and choose the training or tutorial package for initial learning and application.

I think for individual the best way is to read some fundamental statistical books/articles, focus in the area u are interested, do the examples in the books/articles urself by hand then by minitab, finally compare the results. It’s useful to help u to understand how minitab work, and to help u how to interpret the minitab output too. I learn minitab and JMP all by myself by this way, and it works well for me. Usually, I prefer minitab first, and sometimes when I want graphical presentation, I use JMP. But when it comes to DOE, I always use JMP. What I cry for is free materials in the net, coz I am in China and it is hard and expensive to get books of Montgomery or other statistician and quality guru. Please help if u can……

Hi (Person in need of a book on statistics):
You may want to start very simple with your goals and deliverables established in your profession.  You have to master the concept of ROI (return on investment) whetheryou invest time, RMB, efforts, energy etc, today ROI is measured by speed of return on efforts.
If you do not have these well written and verified by the person who is going to support you in your profession, you are probably going to be in the “have to” mode of doing things.  Examples are I have to learn stats, I have to find a book and I have to finish all chapters, etc etc.. The trick is to move into the “get to” mode as fast as you can.
One way to do this is to find out why you consider the learning of the principles of statistics and Minitab and similar software a privilege in your profession.  That will drive you to find the techniques and tools that are needed.
Start small, take up a smll project assignment at work and convert it into project results.  Present it to the management and look for any signs that show encouragement of such behavior.
If you start with the intent that you have to change people in their behavior (thinking behavior) your behavior (though process) has to change, however if you start with the intent to learn statistics and the tools and techniques, there is a likelihood that you may get derailed due to the effort it would take given your current commitments.
This does not necessarily mean that reading a book will not help, but find out how many actually read a book and made a difference in their professional lives with a speed that cannot be matched if you had a mentor to support you.  Others’ experience is the best provided you find the right one.
Get a mentor fast and start applying the principles.  On your book everyone has an opinion based on their experience.  The business stats book is ok but I saw a lot of nodding heads while I used it in several deployments US, Asia, and Europe.  What mattered is how the principles can help in your profession and at a later stage it was a great resource to have as a reference.  Just my experience and others’ may feel different so.  Kind of look at it this way if the book showed up at your doorstep free of cost and effort to get it how ready are you to grasp it?  Most people are no motivated by the availaility of the book but what it has that can change their lives.
If you need any help in this area, you could reach me at [email protected]   Good luck to you and I am sure you will find your way through this phase.
