Which well known former US congressman met with and learned from Dr. Deming (the only one to do so, per Deming)?  It led, in part, to his downfall as a congressman.

The timeframe was 1991 – 1992 when Deming worked with this person.  He was elevated in his congressional position in 1995.  The congressman then created and held a class, Renewing American Civilization, which got him in some deep trouble and he was sanctioned $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee for claiming tax-exempt status related to the course (which included a heavy emphasis on Deming, even included the Red Beads exercise).  He had to stop teaching the class and it became one of the many issues leading to his ultimate fall from grace in congress.   He was finally cleared of wrongdoing by the IRS, but it was after he’d stepped down.  He stepped down in 1998, if memory serves me right.

Bingo!  It was Newt Gingrich.  I watched the class on PBS and it was prety good.  I believe it was Barbara Lawton, who’d worked with Deming, who did the p chart for the Red Beads.  I taped the class on VHS, but can’t find the tapes – oh well.
