There is a very thin line in a DFSS and DMAIC Project.Incidentaly in one of my recent consulting assignments, the organization was trying to improve the process capability of a particular process. On studying the project I could immediatly sense that the project was more of a DFSS than a DMAIC project as the requirements demanded by the customer were very stringent to the technology being used.In fact the Black belt was confused about how to go ahead with the project.after the define and measure phase.
When confronted with the situation I realised the gravity of the problem and applied TRIZ at the analyze  phase to generate various concepts which I evaluated first using PUGH analysis and then combined the solutions by TRIZ and conventional analysis phase to identify various factors in the DOE for the Improve phase.
Looking at this application I feel that the Six Sigma community needs to reelook the training provided and integrate TRIZ in the analyze phase, including concepts of Ideality, Technical Contaradictions, Physical Contradictions, SU Field analysis and the contradiction matrix so that the black belts not only analyze existing data and technology but start looking towards moving towards ideality.
I am looking for a discussion regarding intoduction of TRIZ at analyze phase, not in a DFSS Programe.
TRIZ fits excellently in DFSS but there seems to be a need in DMAIC too.
