I’ve just been hired to redesign the web site of a college. They want to scrap the one they have and start from scratch. I was informed that they received over 10 million hits last year. I have done basic content management for a small web site before, but have no experience in managing such a large project with such a large budget. I’ll be given access to a couple of programmers, an IT team and a design company. Would this be a good project to apply six sigma to? If so, what books should I be reading? Where do I start? (I doubt that they would be willing to send me for six sigma training, so I’ll have to learn this on my own.)

    gchin,
Using Six Sigma for a simple project is a bit of overkill but if the intent is to explore the (DFSS) structure and tools I would recommend using the Design for Six Sigma, A Roadmap for Product Development book by Kai Yang and Basem El-Haik.  It gives you a good overview of the DMADV process and tools….

“Using Six Sigma for a simple project is a bit of overkill”
Not necessarily.  I did it, and was glad I did.  Sure, I had to manage it so it didn’t go nuts.  But I felt like the process was extremely helpful.
