I highly encourage you to map with paper & pencil (or paper, markers, & post-its).

Especially in team settings, software can slow you down and could prevent you from taking the map “gemba.”

Now, if you are looking to document your map for the future:
    – Visio is ok, but not ideal for fast mapping
    – ProcessModel is great for fast mapping, but has counter intuitive quarks that require training and practice.

One VSM, I just photographed. My Master Black Belt (I’m one too) was furious, but VSMs are really intended to be a strategic tool for every day and are meant to be simple, quick, and low tech.

@natashatoo – while I agree with Nik, the full answer depends on what you are looking to do with it. If you’re merely looking to make pretty pictures, than any graphics package can help you do that. If, however, you are looking to create simulations, then you’ll want to look into something like iGrafx Process or several discrete event simulators (for non-continuous processes).

Oh, and if you are looking to document and tie together process control variables and outputs, then Minitab’s Quality Companion does an excellent job.

I’ve recently seen some good results combining Value Stream Mapping and Discrete Event Simulation using Simul8.
