Hello. I am searching the web for employment for my husband. We recently came upon the term ‘PLC’, and would like to know what these initials stand for. Could anyone help us? We were curious as to the meaning of the term as it was used in a manufacturing job posted on the internet.
Thanks for your assistance.0March 23, 2005 at 2:50 am #116685Programable Logic Controller – the best of which are made by the famous Allen Bradley company of Milwaukee.
0March 23, 2005 at 3:01 am #116686Thanks, Stan. That was a quick response to my query. We appreciate it!
0March 23, 2005 at 4:05 am #116696Stans undoubtedly correct again. But it also depends somewhat on how it was used. If used in terms of manufacturing equipment then it is the controller described by Stan. If it was used after the name of the manufacturing entity itself, such as Williams Widgets, PLC, then it means Public Limited Company. And dont get me started on Product Life Cycle, Power Line Communication, ..

However, in the manufacturing world, the PLC you referenced in most likely Programmable Logic Controller. PLCs are commonly used to control machines and subsystems in a manufacturing environment. Virtually any device that needs some type of electrical control can benefit from a PLC. The PLC is essentially a state machine; the decision to turn the outputs on/off is based on the state of the inputs. Programming the PLC customizes it to a specific application.0March 24, 2005 at 3:05 am #116748Hello, Steve. Thanks very much for the answer to ‘plc’. You people are really great!
