Can someone direct me to any guidelines as to what determines whether  a problem  is considered a  true green belt project vs a business,   management, or  technology decision. If you know something is broken and have a possible solution which may require technology and stronger management to enforce the current policy and procedures does that mean the project should not be done as a green belt project and is more of a quick fix?

    Link,
“….a business,   management, or  technology decision.” already has a solution.
A Six Sigma project, regardless of the color of the belt, should be something that the solution is unknown. That is the point of the project.
If you have a possible solution you have to make a judgement on the impact of a wrong decision, your level of confidence and the degree of risk. If you can’t live with any of those make it a project and get some solid data on the possible solution.
If you want to track something interesting spend a few months tracking the quick fixes and see how infrequently they are actually done and how effective they are at fixing the problem. When we finished the first wave a BB;s at GEAE the VP of Engineering (who attended every minute of every review and asked every single BB candidate at least one question – visible involvement) addressed the wave at the end of the class and said something like: I am familiar with everyone of these projects because I have fixed them all at least once.
    Just my opinion.
    Good luck

    Mike,
My feeling is if  I am a manager and a subject matter expert in my  field I would hope I would at least have an opinion as to what the solution might be. If I didn’t, than anyone off the street should be able to do my job.  Is it wrong to go through six sigma and validate a possible solution if you keep an open mind and are willing to accept the solution where the analysis leads? Thanks

    Link,
We send a lot of stuff with “known solutions” through DMC just to make sure that we really understand the problem and formalize the solution. There are quite a few of these that end up with a different solution. That is generally driven by a poor measurement system that changes the data.
At the end of the day you are a SME and the boss it is really your call just keep an open mind.
    Just my opinion.
    Good luck.

    Hello folks,
So much for the ability and owership of the VP at GEAE. You’d think a guy who made it to that level would have made fixes that worked and would of have the inititive to make sure what he fixed held.   I mean this guy  was fixing jet engine production problems…that he didn’t really fix or just threw a band aid on to get by…so he claimed.
Happy 4th of July and Go Red Sox!
    Later,
