In the six sigma methologogy, DPMO –defect per million of opportunities helps to determine the capability of a process-It is the same as PPM-parts per million–
However, some would argue that when talking about PPM, you denote the idea if deffective pieces and only talk about parts.
Note that  in some methodology, some are talking about PPM, or even PPB part per Billion and not DPBO

As Karim said, DPMO is used in the SS methodology to indicate defects per milion of oportunities. PPM is used as a general rate to indicate a concentration of something. For instance, you can use PPM to indicate the grade of pure of water, air, etc
I apologyze for my poor English.
I hope it can help you.

    Michael,
PPM refers to defective parts per million.
DPMO refers to defects per million opportunities.
One part can have more than one opportunity for a defect.  So PPM will tell you how many defective parts you can expect out of a process when 1 million parts are produced.  DPMO is NOT the same.  If there are 10 opportunities for a defect each time you produce a part (i.e. length long, length short, weight over, weight under, ID out of spec, etc.), you only have to produce 100,000 parts to accumulate 1 million opportunities for a defect.
    Hope this helps.

Karim and Back are wrong, HornJM is right.
You may encounter multiple opportunities of defect introduction for a given part or process.
DPMO is, “The great Equalizer”.   It allows you to compare varied and disparate processes, products and populations.
