Due diligence is the process of ensuring a product/service meets the intended needs before purchase.  There are also due diligence proceedings in the legal and political realm, but supplier due diligence is the most common in the business world.  Due diligence studies are also performed quite extensively when acquiring businesses.
Say you were buying a computer system. You would want to perform a due diligence study to ensure that the system you purchased met your needs and was cost effective in terms of your capital budget.
If you don’t do your due diligence, you have the risk of over expenditure, sometimes to the point of bankruptcy.

Before you give all your eggs for someone to place in a basket, “begin with the end in mind,” and make sure that the “someone” and the “basket” are for real. Protect your investment. Dot your i’s/cross your t’s. Protect your risk. Ask: What can possibly go wrong? How will I know? What will I do? How can I prevent it? Reserach, read, investigate, plan, and do, but remember what the General said, “Plans are worthless, but planning is essential.”
