Any relationship between World Class Manufacturing and Six Sigma? I would think that Six Sigma is one of the strategies of achieving World Class Manufacturing. Any comment?

    May,
What is your definition of “World class manufacturing” ? Depending on how you define it, Six Sigma may or may not be a factor.
If you consider Motorola, Allied-Signal (Honeywell), or GE “World-Class”, perhaps Six Sigma can be a strategy to achieve it. If you strive to achieve the product level of defects of these companies, then Six Sigma may be the reason.

World Class came along at the end of the 70’s or beginning of the 80’s as a ‘methodology of mind’ rather than a super structurre.  6-Sigma has been here for only a few years—late 90’s.  If one is to draw a corollary here it is not in comparison, but in evolution.  World Class is out of Jidoka and TPM nowadays with CI running through it all.  Six Sigma is all about 3 things—Credible Information, Community and Supplemental Services.  It is a free info source for all to apply to WHATEVER.  World Class is more than a nomenclature for excellent business practices.  If Six-Sigma is not employed rationally and one’s Champions are late in the race, then all bets are off anyway.
