John Deere: Better By Design

Using DFSS to create products that meet customer and regulatory expectations

SKU: 523

As one of the longest operating American manufacturers of agriculture, forestry and construction equipment, it’s no wonder that John Deere has become a household name.

With increasingly strict emissions regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and rising expectations from customers, the stakes are higher than ever to produce efficient engines.

But the current industry climate has the business taking a new approach to these obstacles: Design for Six Sigma.

In the initial stages of DFSS deployment, many John Deere engineers were skeptical about taking any approach other than the traditional engineering techniques to solve problems, mainly because they were already highly skilled and tenured in their areas of expertise.

The impact of DFSS on John Deere Power Systems is catching the attention of not only engineers in the Engine Division, but also other parts of the business.

Serving as a benchmark for other divisions is just one more sign of the Engine Division’s solid deployment, on a list that also includes successful projects and a team of engineers who continue to use DFSS tools and processes.
