Following is the relationship between Cp and GRR:
Cp(Actual) = Cp(Measured)/sqrt(1-GRR^2). If there is no significant mean shift in your process, the above formula holds true for Cpk’s as well.

For most process related issues, root cause analysis should focus on two aspects i.e occurence and escape. In a G8D, process for (D4) Root Cuase analysis, find out the reasons that caused the issue to happen in first place. This addresses occurence aspect.

Ford’s 8D (Eight Disciplines) problem solving methodology works great. 8D steps and template format may be protected under IP. I’ve used C&E matrix with great success in problem solving meetings. This works great particularly when team members with strong personalities are involved in root cause analysis meetings.
