So maybe the way to look at it isn’t for 70 rounds of golf but for one 18 hole round of golf.
Then the calculator inputs would be:
Total Units = 18 greens
Opportunities = 2 stokes/putts per green
Total defects = 1 extra stroke/putt on one of those 18 greens
Does that make sense? -

I’m having trouble understanding exactly what the calculator wants in the way of data from me. Can you explain Units, Opportunities, and Defects using this golf example?
A golfer plays 70 rounds. Within each round are 18 greens. Ideally he/she wants to have no more than two putts on each green. However, the golfer three putts one green on each o…[Read more] -

Consider the number of lines of code in Microsoft XP, for example, and then tell me if it’s okay to have 30+ defects. That’s about what you would have if XP was of Six Sigma quality. I suggest you look at the Carniege Mellon University Software Institute site and learn how they measure software defects. In their opinion, Six Sigma software would…[Read more]

A myth I’m hearing in the process industries is “Six Sigma isn’t suited for batch processes (i.e., pharmaceticals, food and beverage, etc.). Since Six Sigma’s roots are deep in Motorla’s discrete manufacturing and semi-conductor business, it seems strange to me that people would argue such a myth.
Does anyone have practical examples and positive…[Read more]
