Torrance replied to the topic Sales force Vs Production Schedules in the forum General 12 years, 6 months ago
Hi Mike – do you know for sure that Sales only do
this because of incentives/targets etc or is that an
assumption / perception?
Have you asked them why there is an increase in
Sales in Q4?
I realise that you are already trying to look for
solutions – but I would suggest you need to try and
understand the problem much more before doing…[Read more] -

Torrance replied to the topic Is this Important in the forum General 12 years, 10 months ago
Hi Ahsan, anyone can use DMAIC – there is no
restriction or regulation. However:Black Belt Certification should mean that the person
has an understanding of the method/process. This is
what adds the value. It makes the difference between
activity of going through DMAIC as a process, and
the underlying meaning and purpose.
I say should,…[Read more] -

Ahsan, anybody can use DMAIC – there is no
restriction. However:Certified Black Belts – the idea is that those who
have gone through Black Belt certification should
understand the process/method in much more detail.
This is where the value is added for any tools
(understanding not just of the activity, but of it’s
purpose and meaning,…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic Final Inspection – Visual 100% ? in the forum General 12 years, 10 months ago
KB – in short the answer is NO.
This inspection adds little value to them or you.Best thing to do is to go discuss with your
supplier, get to understand their processes, and
assist them in improving their processes so that
inspection can be reduced / eliminated – not
increased.
This doesn’t just happen – it means looking at ways
of…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic Goals for Black Belts in the forum General 13 years ago
Hi Vinnie – perhaps we can agree to disagree on this
then, and there’s nothing wrong with that…Here’s my thoughts:
You are thinking of measuring project completion –
this for me is not about giving someone a list of
recommendations. It’s about implementing those
solutions, and being able to get stakeholders to
sustain the changes.…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic Goals for Black Belts in the forum General 13 years ago
Why do we want to measure individuals? Is that fair to measure one black belt against
another – when they are not the ones making the
improvements – the whole team is. Measuring this way can be very unhelpful – the best,
worst and average results are from the system, and
processes – not necessarily from the black belts
themselves. Sure,…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic Black Belt Course Case Study/Simulation in the forum General 13 years, 2 months ago
srosati – why use a case study of someone else’s
problem/solutions, or simulation?
Why not use real business problems, and work
through those?Davy T -
Torrance replied to the topic Warehouse Cost Measure in the forum General 13 years, 3 months ago
Black Belt, my opinion would be to keep the
measures real. The more calculation you have to do,
the less tangible the benefits tend to become (in
general). The answer(s) may be to question why you have been
asked to free up space. I would expect that there
is some kind of reason or benefit behind that.If the plan is to be able to handle…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic Six Sigma Project Closure in the forum General 13 years, 3 months ago
Robert and Chris are both correct. In the scenario where no end point was agreed up
front, which seems to be the case in your project
(although I could be jumping to the wrong
conclusion here), I would expect to make
improvements to the process. This means I would
find it difficult to accept project closure until
improvements have been…[Read more] -

m4cot – Rather than any advanced Lean or Six Sigma tools,
the simplest technique for me would be to challenge
your existing process. Why do you think
repossessing is the best solution? Why do you think
the same rules should apply given the ‘current
climate’.Your process should adapt to suit the climate, not
simply continue with…[Read more] -

Hi Jason, the blue bar down the left hand side will

Torrance replied to the topic Savings Calculation in the forum General 13 years, 3 months ago
abCAM – it doesn’t always have to be about cost.
Six Sigma is about reducing variation in processes
– it sounds like you’ve done that, with better
customer satisfaction. However, it also relies on
the collection, validation and analysis of data,
and then review of how that data variation has been
reduced following specific improvement…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic When in DMAIC to use 5 Whys in the forum General 13 years, 3 months ago
Hi Pete – seems you have read and acknowledged the
previous posts, but haven’t taken them in.It doesn’t really matter where you use these tools
– you can use them in various stages of your
problem solving efforts.Trying to specify which phase of DMAIC they go in
only constrains you, and those who are being
‘taught’. If it helps, think of…[Read more] -

Pete – it seems you have read the responses, but
not actually taken them in. So, I guess my post
just repeats what the other guys have already
suggested. It doesn’t really matter where you use 5 whys or
fishbone diagrams etc – use them wherever it suits
the specific project best. You are only constraining yourself, and therefore
those…[Read more] -
Torrance replied to the topic Six Sigma Tools in the forum Finance 13 years, 3 months ago
Mmccout – my point was for you to decide the tools
– not someone on the forum. As Black Belt, surely you know the ones you are
using most in your own organisation? Each
organisation will have a different set of tools
that they use – the important thing is relevance.
Why not write down the tools that you have actually
used so far as black…[Read more] -

Curious, I am also curious – why do you ask people
on this forum, instead of people who are working in
that area, and those who supply into the area. I
realise you mentioned you cannot change the way
they supply – but have you explored this with them,
and tried to understand why, or is that an
assumption?Your project is not for you…[Read more] - Load More
