Thanks Eugene. I think my problem was that I assumed that out of control always means undesirable.  In that case it may not be undesireable.  It either means that there was a big coincidence or the measurement device may not have good enough resolution.

Yikes, thats a pretty wide-open question!
Could you provide us with some context or parameters so we could effectively provide you with some insights?

We did a similar approach as Brit for CT exams. We took a look at the demand of the day, as well as the hourly demand.
We recorded the demand on a Production Control Board. The techs can now record actual productivity against predicted demand to see whether they are ahead or behind schedule. We also subdivided it into IP, OP and ED because of the…[Read more]

  • You are right, the Minitab help files are not bad.  I just like to have a reference book that I can have with me, instead of moving back and forth between screens.

  • I would give the credit to Shewhart.  It seems that Deming often mistakingly gets credit for what Shewhart developed.  Deming merely popularized it as a tool for manufacturing.

I support this form of the response, however, structuring along the theme of a Value Stream Map.
LOS could be considered the overall Cycle Time and each project that is run to improve the Cycle Time would have its own specific metrics. I am not aware of too many projects/kaizen events tackling the overall Cycle Time as they would be trying to…[Read more]

Obviuosly mentioning what we do in terms of leveraging SS technology in terms of maturity didn’t sit well with you, Stan.
As a LSS pratictioner, Univ faculty member, big 4 consultant, TOC Jonah…I attempt to “Give back” insights to SS community and others..with no expectations.
Stan, as a regular contributor to this forum, I’ll certainly do my…[Read more]

Just attempting to supply insight to the community in terms of maturity of the LSS Teams within corporations as opposed to the tools available…..they are two different threads.
Thought it might add some insight to the original question.

Folks: [deleted promotion] With that said, we always evaluate the company’s LSS maturity, relative to the Team’s life cycle, not the tools they utilize. We would say…YES, SS has matured in terms of the tools BUT, the average LEan/SS Team, as an entity, is in its infancy, averaging less than FIVE years old. Enjoy! Greg

  • I have had experience with on-line training.  It is my feeling that you should offer both types of training.  Many universities now offer classes that are on-line and  with an instructor to offer the right learning environment for the student.  I actually prefer a blended approach where you have the students take some courses online.  Then you ge…[Read more]

I am still wondering about STD work for mentors.  Could someone please let me know if they have anything?

    Thank you for that answer

  • keyes replied to the topic Stem and Leaf Plot in the forum General 13 years ago

I also think that it great that you are teaching some of these tool.  The stem and leaf plot is a tool that I have seen in several industries.  (Marine, Wood Products and IT)  It is generally not a bad tool for smaller data sets.
I have been teaching tools such as hand calculation of mean, median, range and standardar deviation as well as reg…[Read more]

    Mike,
I like your set-up for this experiment, but how can you measure repeatability?  How are you separating gage variation from process variation?  You cannot assume two different shots are like the same part.  This is why I thought it should be a nested study, but I am unsure how to set this up.
    Thanks for the response,
    Greg

  • Greetings folks:
Just saw dialogue on applicability of LSS in Mining. Its absolutely “Spot On!” The entire Mining Industry, across all products is just begging for variation control, SPC and more.
We and some of our LSS partners have worked with mining companies, especially in South Africa. Biggest issue is……variability in almost every…[Read more]

    Very pithy reply……
    Try this folks………
Lean eliminates waste/time and increases velocity.
Six Sigma reduces variability in all processes.
USe of both simultaneously is very powerful.
    Enjoy.

    Interesting thread folks……..
    Two injections…….
    1) Lean/SS has been around for some time and still growing. The methods are sound and agree they require management commitment & provide statistical, fact-based results. The community has done a very good job of “Selling” LSS to Executives.
    2) Been working in LSS community for over 10…[Read more]

  • keyes replied to the topic the best SS provider in the forum General 13 years, 4 months ago

I agree with Michael………the Good news about this community is…there are many SS service providers. The Bad news is…there are many SS service providers.
It does come down to what you want to do.
You might want to hit the ISSSP web site as well for rudimentary education on the SS community.
Two other providers you may not know…[Read more]
