Okay, so this is a bit off topic, but in reading through many of the threads, there seems to beΒ a lot of experienced aeropace folks responding. My sonΒ just finished is sophomore year in high school and has decided he wants to major in aerospace engineering (not sure why this specific field). With your experience in this field, would you recommend him to pursue this option or perhaps a different focus within engineering? He’s currently a 4.0 student and is considering UofM Thanks.

There should be a lot of potential by the time he gets out of school.Β  There is currently a large surplus of people in this industry, but this should change in the next 5-10 years.Β  We are expecting retirements as well as an influx of orders as the economy begins to rebound.
He may try to be less focused.Β  A majority of the Engineers at my company are Mechanical Engineers, Industrial Engineers, and Electrical Engineers.Β  One of these may open up more options for him (including Aerospace).Β  However, if this is truly his passion, then maybe he should go for it.

In my oppinion, you should always go for the career which interests you.Β  You spend such a large part of your life at work.
Like Dcolvin, I’d also suggest though a mechanical or electronic engineering degree to leave some flexibility.Β  It’s usually possible to choose the career relevant modules durring the study.
Most important is to start trying to get work experience early as near to the industry as one can.Β  This helps the study, proves whether the job is what you thought and shows employers that you really are interested.
    Good luck

Thanks to both of you for responding to my questions. I’ve been a bit concerned that an aerospace major may be a bit restrictive.
