Does anyone have any experience of implementing Lean in the insurance sector. What are the disadvantages / advantages of implementing lean?

Not in insurance, but in sales and support transactional processes. We did help a German MNC’s Asia sales and service center implementing lean recently. The advantages are you see quick and significant result achieved in the short period of time with minimum data collection in cycle time reduction, reduced order backlog, improved on-time and accurate account payable and received, etc.One week Kaizen event is extensively used for every core process and a total of 10 processes are lean overhauled within 6 months. The disadvantage is staff are always over-stressed under a fast pacing Kaizen event, a totally new exercise for them.

    Dog,
Notwishstanding my lack of experiuence in the insurance industry, I don’t see any difference between manufacturing, transactional, or service: A view supported by the recent trend of putting more emphasis on ‘processes’ as opposed to ‘problem solving.’
As you know I’ve spent much of my career raising concerns about statistical assumptions, which is germane to the ‘problem solving’ approach – because most problems are not statistically independent.
My advice to the poster would be to take a process approach and  decide which processes need improvement or re-design, which ones to ‘accelerate.’
    Cheers,
    Andy

Lean can applied in anywhere, and it’s good to come with Six Sigma too.
The main themes for Lean are Value, Flow and Pull in every aspect on continuous base.  You can apply many Lean tools in Insurance Industry.  Examples will be VSM, Poka-yoke, TPM, SMED, Waste Matrix, 5S, Kanban,….  Take SMED as a good example.  We have Changeover time for every operation.  Take Policy Issuance Process as an example, we need to input insurer’s details in our computer system.  Before that, we need to turn on the computer, open the software, get the necessary insurer’s information ready.  Those are the NVA preparation work which can be eradicated or reduced by using SMED technique.
    Hope it helps.
