Hello,
I’m new to the forum and a student engineering (holland).
I’m a trainee and i want to use six sigma methodics to define my problems.
I’m unsure wich part of the companie is my customer, and wich are the suppliers. Therefor, before defining the CCR’s and the CBR’s I want to fill in the SIPOC diagram. However, I found in the theory that this diagram is mostly used in the measure phase. Is it correct to use the SIPOC this early in the define phase, or should i use something different?
Thanks!
Greetings, Jasper

You want to use your COPIS  (also known as SIPOC) early in the Define phase.  It along with your VOC and Project Charter are the primary deliverables from define that you want to take forward with you into Measure.  And keep in mind, these are living documents.  As you progress with your project you will want to update them as new information becomes relevent.  Cheers and good luck.

Dear Jasper Sweere,
1- First thing I want you to know that the SIPOC is used in th Define phase and not in Measure phase.
2- The define phase includes:
A- Clear statement of the intended improvement and defining the problem including business cse and team charter.
B- A high level map of the process which is SIPOC.
C- A list for what is important to the customers.
3- The tools most commonly used in the Define phase are:
a- Project Charter includes the buiness case.
b- Stakeholder analysis.
c- Supplier, Input, Process, Output and Customers (SIPOC).
d- Rolled Throughput Yield (RTY).
e- Voice Of Customers (VOC).
f- Affinity Diagram.
g- Kino Model.
h- Critical To Quality tree (CTQ).
4- For your question the customers includes but not limited to stakeholders, managers, people who work in the process under study, upstream and down stream departments, suppliers, inance and internal and external customers.
Hope that this answers your question.
Thanks,

HBGB – glad you posted.
We need to open DMAIC up – doesn’t have to be as strict – the phases are interlinked – not like we stop one stage and start another is it?
I’ve used SIPOC in all the phases..
Define – to show requirements
Measure – as part of the current state process map
Analyse – used to show needs/wants or used to show where errors occur in the process (during handovers etc)
Improve – as sanity check to make sure all the process output requirements are covered
Control – again, sanity check. To update previous SIPOCs
In short – we dont need to put the tools into buckets – we use them whenever it’s appropriate….

I read a good article in the isixsigma magazine recently that was about “making the tools work for you”
Six Sigma is really a tool box or tool kit, out of which you can choose the most appropriate tool for the job. If SIPOC analysis is that most appropriate tool in this case, I would use it.
Incidentally in my company we use SIPOC in Define – but as previous posters have said, it is a living document that gets refined as we move through into Measure and even Analyse.

Jasper,
